[Facts] Re: Shaham?
in reply to a message by Pauliina
According to the Jerusalem Post (Sunday, May 11, 1997), "Zionists... chose last names that emphasized the quality of strength, including Even (stone), Sela (rock), Gazit (rock), Shaham (granite), Peled (steel), Tamir (tall) and Amir (treetop)..."
The persian theory also holds some water. Shaham is quoted as a boy's Parsi name (http://www.avesta.org/znames.htm). Although no etymology is provided, I suspect the name could be related with Shah ("king").

Thanks Pavlos!
Thank you very much! I was a bit lazy with my own research on this name - I guess I just knew I would find all the answers I needed on this board!

Youre welcome :) By the way, what's with the extra "i" in Paulina? :P
It´s a Finnish "speciality", used in order to indicate a long vowel. Other examples of Finnish spellings: Saara, Tiina, Eeva...
People sometimes assume I´m into creative spellings, even more so since I named my son Saam :0) - this a Persian name (pronunciation: rhymes with "calm").

Very interesting :) Maybe you could submit a few more names from Finland Mike C (this site's founder and head honcho)for inclusion in the database.
So if I ever lsft Greece for Finland, would Paavlos or Pavloos be appropriate? :P

Yes, Pavlina is your correct name 'round here!
Taru? Every self-respecting etymologist knows it means "legend" :))
Once again, thanks for your cool list of names.
