[Facts] Azra
Our daughter's name is Azra and we have come across several references to this name, along with several meanings of it. Just some examples: The poet Heine wrote a poem called The Azra about a youth of the clan of Azra who dies for love. A rock group from Croatia was called Azra (following the reference to Heine's Azras, as the ones who die for love...). While the last name Azra is most often found in Yemen and Pakistan, one of the recent Miss World is named Azra and comes from Turkey.
In the countries of former Yugoslavia, it is most common among Bosnians, both Muslim and Jewish, but it is also found among Romani (Gypsy) in all of the former Yugoslav republics. Some of the meanings: from Hebrew "strength", Arabic "star". The meaning of "virgin" came up because it is one of the stars in the Virgo constellation...or is it the other way round? Our daughter's comment: Mami is embarrassinng me!

Azra is basically Hebrew name . Azra was Jew prophet of God( Yahweh). He lived in Babylonia during the period of serfdom of Jews there. There is Old Testament of Azra also where you can find verses about Babel ( Babylonia). This prophet is also part of faith and revered in religion of Islam, where he is called Azeez or Uzair( peace be upon him). There is reference in Quran about him. He slept for 100 years. His mule died and only skeleton was there when he awoke after 100 years . His food was hot and fresh. Allah taught him how there will be new life after death.

that's funny...I named my laptop Azra (yes, I name my computers) but I'd never heard of any of those connections! I just thought I made it up and liked the way it sounded. I connected it in my head to "Ezra" (no etymological connection, but it sounds similar), which means "help", so that made sense when naming a computer. But anyway, I love the name...sorry I can't help you with any information, but it's lovely!
