Amadeo is one of my favourite names. It's up there with Friedrich, Leopold, Horatio, and Aric for me. I think it works better than Amadeus simply because Amadeus still has way too many ties to Mozart.
Mozart's great, of course, but Amadeo doesn't carry with it such a strong image. It's like Roman versus Romain or Romeo; Roman is going to be pretty neutral as far as other people's mental images with the names. Romain, on the other hand, will get asked if he's got a brother named Iceberg, and Romeo will be asked about his girlfriend, Juliet.
