[Opinions] Sullivan & Sutton
I work with a guy who has a little girl he and his wife adopted from China, and they are going to adopt another little girl this year. The little girl they have now is named Sullivan, and they plan to name the next Sutton. I love this guy to death, he's a good friend and a nice guy, but I had to keep from cringing when he told me the names. :{ I just smiled and said they were "different" or something. Am I the only one that thinks these aren't great names, esp. for little GIRLS?

I like Sutton, partly because Sutton Foster is one of my favorite Broadway actresses! I also think Sullivan is a good mn. I have 2 friends with this middle name, one is a boy and the other is a girl, and both of their mothers maiden names is Sullivan. (A very common last name around here)

These names are terrible on girls... Sullivan is cute on a boy, and Sutton is awful on both sexes...

Nms, but not terrible (prefer Sullivan on a boy), but @ least they go together!:0

They are both too surname-y for my taste (regardless of gender). There's a handful of surnames I like as first names, but they are ones that don't *sound* like surnames, if that makes sense (e.g. Emberlin (g), Delaney (either), Scarlett (g)).

I love the names if they're used for boys. Not crazy about them as girls' names.

They're definitely masculine. And while I like Sullivan for a boy, I can't get past the inevitable nn Sully...not the most pleasant word!Sutton is a good word and place name. I like the look of it, and I like the way it sounds -- as a place name. However, it's awkward and far too consonanty for a person. In my accent I don't even pronounce the "o", and it just sounds ugly as a person name.I know several girls adopted from China, and the best names I've heard are Willow, Jade, and Jasmine. They kept their Chinese names as middle names.I also like the name May for a Chinese girl, because it means "beautiful" in Mandarin. (The pinyin romanization is mei, and the character is ).~ CaitEdited to include the character for mei.

I love SUllivan for a BOY, but on a girl it's WAAAAYYYY too masculine. Sutton Foster is one of my favorite Broadway actresses, but I still think it's a very unplesant name.

When I read the title of this post from the message board I thought you were going to ask if I thought the names would be good for your twin boys who you were soon to have. And I was going to tell you that Sullivan is an adorable name and Sutton was ok but I wouldnt choose it. I was also going to tell you that they were too close for my taste too. Well I think that this guy needs to know all of that plus THESE ARE DEF LITTLE BOY NAMES!!!!!!

Both names are too surname-y to me (I like certain surnames as formal names, but not these). I would say only use them if they were family names, and then only as middle name (for example, I like the idea of giving the mother's maiden name as a middle name to the child). Sullivan is extremely masculine (and I think of Ed Sullivan). Sutton is the same, and just isn't a good name, period, for a boy even. The sound of it just isn't pleasing. Plus, Sullivan & Sutton resembles that of a law firm. Do you know if the girls were named already, what their names were, and if they still have them? I'm in favor of using the adopted child's given names as the middle name, if the parents must give them new first names.

I'm not sure what Sullivan's mn is, or what her name was when they adopted her at 8 months old. They don't have the other baby yet, so I don't know about her name or age, etc. I do have to say that I can see past Sullivan's name as she is a gorgeous, sweet, happy little girl who is very loved. And I'm not trying to say they're bad parents or anything because the names are "different" (lol), I was just wondering what other people thought of them. Sorry, just wanted to clarify that. :)And Lissa Hannah, I agree with the surname and masculine parts of your post, especially. And the law firm bit. :b

I wouldn't think they were bad parents for choosing "different" names. Goodness, so many parents would be charged with a crime for choosing "different" names! But, I'm so glad to hear that the girl is in a loving home. :)
