[Surname] Tiemeyer
My last name is Tiemeyer. I was wondering what its origin is and what exactly it means. I'm white with Dutch and Danish, and some German background. I don't know if that helps at all.

www.ancestry. com confirms what my name book says:

North German: distinguishing name for a tenant farmer (see Meyer) whose land was near a meeting place (Middle Low German tie).

According to Rosa and Volker Kohlheim (ed.): Familiennamen, Mannheim 2000 (Duden Verlag) Middle Low German "ti" or "tig" denotes a "public assembly square of a village, both for serious and serene purposes, usually elevated with some trees (lime-trees) and big stones at the sides serving as benches".

Another possible derivation of the TIE part is the first element of DIETMAR.
