Sanderson means son of Alexander - it seems to have originated in County Durham, England in the early 13th century. A possible ancestor is Alexander de Bedick whose son James took the name James de debick Sanderson (or James de bedick Alexander's son).

"Sanderson" literally means "son of Sander". "Sander" is a pet form of "Alexander", which means "helper of mankind."-- Nanaea
