I heard a little girl being called this today in the store, she was around 3. WDYT?

I don't care much for the name Lotus, myself. It doesn't sound feminine or appealing in any way to me. When I saw this post though, I thought of a name that means lotus that I absolutely love. It made me think of the name Padma. I remembered that there is a character in Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children named Padma, and the narrator constantly refers to her as his "lotus" because that is what her name means. I like the name Padma. I don't think I would use it, as it is a very ethnic name, but I still love it nonetheless.

How fanciful.
I say that because the flower is traditionally very meaningful, so using Lotus as a name is a thoughtful idea. However, the English word just isn't very much like a feminine name, since we're used to -us being a masculine ending like in Latin names. So it feels a little funky and "out there" to call a girl Lotus -- like every time you address her, you're invoking all the meaning of a lotus. It's a bit .. heavy. A fancy or foreign word / name meaning "lotus" might be less so.
Still and all, I think it's a neat thing. Sort of along the lines of virtue names, only more modern sounding and less stuffy. I wouldn't use it, but I approve.

I think I like it in theory, or written down, better than I would in use or on a real person. I could deal with it as a mn, maybe.

It's a nice flower, but I don't like it as a name. I much prefer Lois and Lovise, which sound similar.
Mostly, it makes me think of bound feet in China, which were supposed to resemble three-inch lotuses. I've seen women with bound feet, and it's horrific. I have a great dislike of anything that remotely reminds me of it.

Lotus wasn't Wang Lung's wife. She was his concubine. His wife was O-lan. I instantly thought of that book, as well, and was put off the name as a result. It reminds me of that character, of his first meeting with her in the brothel or whatever, and the pain he causes his family through his relationship with her.

Lissa Hannah, I always find it interesting how you associate names so much with words that sound similar. You mention it in many of your comments. It's just interesting how different people pick up on different things, as I'd never think of Lotus and locust as being similar unless someone mentioned it. One of the good things about these boards is how they show different perspectives. I don't often agree with yours, but I've learned to appreciate your way of looking at names.
Even if you're usually crazy. *wink* I mean, seriously. Lotus and locust? What on earth are you thinking?! Crazy lady...*grin*...but hey, it takes all kinds, and congrat's on your unique perspective. Lol.
