[Facts] Behind the Surname?
I've put together a website for surnames -- http://surnames.behindthename.comI'm going to run this site a bit differently than BtN. People are able to contribute directly, making additions and corrections via the web. Click the "Add a Surname" link to see how this works. The site is in the very early stages of development. So far there are only 6 names in the database. I'm not going to widely publicize it until I've got more of the bugs worked out and some more surnames added.Anyways, take a look and add your surname!

I'll let you know as soon as I dig up some meanings for all those old family names I love to keep track of!

Don't have any of the family names yet, but I'll leave it to you to add them. ;)

I'll try to submit some from my family and perhaps a few from my friends (another site to recommend over at Mother's Magic and around campus.) :DPhyllis (aka Sidhe Uaine or Gaia Euphoria)

Mike,Behind the Surname looks fabulous! I really love the idea and the lay-out! :-D Keep up the good work, and I'm sure it'll grow to be a site as huge and useful as Behind the Name. :)I'm from the Netherlands, and I research my family tree (= genealogy), which include lots of Dutch surnames, German surnames and, Belgian surnames and even some French surnames. I can add them all, if you don't mind. :)
Only, the problem is, when people try to admit a last name to your Behind the Surname site, they can't put what the origin of that surname is, from which country it is and what the meaning of the surname is. So all that they can do is add the surname and that's it, which makes it hard for you to decide what the origin and such of that surname is, especially if it's an surname from abroad. Well... you get the point. ;)Anyway, I'm gonna go work on a list for you to add to the database now.... I can assure you I've got tons of surnames in my programme for genealogy! ;)Regards,Lu
