The placename Stirling is found as Strevelin in 1124, and Sterling in about 1470. Meaning uncertain. The name may originally have been that of the river, now the Forth, on which Stirling stands.

Oxford? - I'm afraid I've got a cheap edition of the real thing. My Oxford dictionary of place-names (A.D.Mills 1998) doesn't have Stirling. So what do you have?
