I think Molly is a very immature sounding name. I can only see a child with the name - not an adult. I only know one woman named Mollie (with that spelling), and she's in her 80s.
I don't see it as a name from the 1980s - more like the 20s, 30s, 40s. I don't think any name is "plain."
I do like the names Jane and Abigail, and if I had to choose a combo, I'd choose Molly Jane.
