Hi Rachel,
I found out two different meanings of Karp:
1) From the Middle Low German word 'karpe' (carp) as a name for a fish-merchant
2) From the short form of the Greek first name 'Polykarp' (Greek 'polýs' = many, much + Greek 'karpós' = fruit)
