Help[Opinions] Marcellus?
I met a little boy named Marcellus recently, and it got me thinking about the name. I've started to really like it. What are your thoughts on it? Does it sound (as I suspect it would, to people like my grandmother) like a "black" name to you? What might be a nice middle name to go along with it?
I was thinking perhaps one of these:
Marcellus Riley (Riley is a family name)
Marcellus Henry (Henry is a family name that isn't one of my favourites but has a habit of sounding nice with a lot of names)
Marcellus Gene
Marcellus Michael (Which is a lot of M and L, I know, but Michael's an important family name)
Marcellus Frederick
The only Marcellus combination I'm certain I don't like is Marcellus Ray--rather weird, because I like Ray and Rae with almost everything. :) None of these have really struck my fancy yet; I'm afraid I'm in need of help.
Oh, and while we're at it, any opinions on these names?
Ogden (after Nash, natch)
Bertram or Bertrand (which do you prefer? How do you feel about Bert?)
Jerome
Joash (Too similar to Josh?)
Harold
Zacchaeus (after the Biblical character)

Russell Crowe played a Maximus in the film Gladiator.
(Personally, I'm surprised that I know of people who would consider Maximus a viable choice for a name. Maybe I'm alone in this, but since I had to memorize the main muscles and bones in elementary school, the name says nothing to me except "BUTT!" That gets followed by giggling, of course.)

Oops! Wel I was close - I knew it was a latin name.

I have an uncle named Marcellus but we call him Lou, i've never heard him called Marcellus. He has a twin sister named Marcella (how creative). She is a nun so we call her Sister Modesta. They are about 72 years old. I've never really liked either name altough, especially as twins!
As for the other names the only one I sort of like is Jerome.

I like Marcellus fine. I see it as an ancient Roman name. Of the mns you listed, I like Marcellus Michael the best.
I adore the names Bertrand and Bertram. I love the nn Bertie, Bert is OK. I like each one equally. Bertram sounds so British, Bertrand vacillates in my mind between being French (gorgeous pronunciation) and British. Bertrand Russell pops to mind.
Ogden makes me think Utah, not Nash. It has a harsh, abrupt sound to it that I don't care for. I love Jerome and wish it were more popular. (Similarly, I love Gerald, Gerard and Germain.) Harold is quirky and fun, and the nn Hal has retro appeal. Joash I haven't heard of before. It's a little out there, for me. Is is related to Joachim? Zacchaeus brings me right back to Sunday school and a song they used to play ("But the people, they were tall, and Zacchaeus, he was small . . .") I can't separate the name from that time period. It's a pity, because it is a fun, underappreciated name.
