[Surname] Re: re history of surname
in reply to a message by ramcke
Hi!
Ramcke is a first name also used as a surname. It's a Low German pet form of Old German first names starting or ending with Ram-/-ram, like eg. Rambert (raven + bright) or Wilram (will + raven). So the ram-part means raven. The suffix -cke/ke is a diminutive suffix, so Ramcke means "little raven".
Hinrichs is a Low German surname meaning "son of Hinrich". Hinrich is a Low German form of the Old German first name Heinrich (the English form is Henry). Heinrich means "home" + "rich, mighty".
The names Ramcke + Ramke and Hinrichs + Hinrichsen are still very popular in this area. I live in Holstein!!! ;-)
