I like Ellie a lot. Sweet and old-fashioned, it can stand on it's own and doesn't need to be a nn for anything. (Although I suppose it could be a nn for Elizabeth.)

I prefer it as a nn, maybe for Eleanor, Ella, Ellen, Elsa or Elspeth. And I do like it, a lot.

It's too nickname-y, I think, to be a formal name. I prefer Ella with Ellie as a nickname.

Ellie seems kind of plain to me but it's nice enough with a full name to back it up. Elizabeth and Eleanor would be good because then, even if she didn't like Ellie, she'd have lots of alternative nns to choose from (Liza, Betty, Norah, Lenore, etc.).

Of course, there are many more names with the "-el" element in the middle of the name. I've seen Isabelle, nn Ellie. It's a bit forced, to me, but still an option.
