How did Jane come to be a feminine form of John? What about Joan?

I guess it went something like:
Johann -> Johanna -> Joanna -> Joan, and Johan -> John.
Also Jeannette (female from Jean which is a variant of John) became Janette, then Janet and in the end - Jane.
