[Opinions] WDYT of Mary?
Mary- like it, don't like it? Dated, classic? Mary is in a very odd position, name-age wise, I think. DO you think a variant, like Maria, is a better choice?I personally like the sound and history of the name Mary, and think that it's timeless, and it has some great namesakes too.

It just strikes me as dull and boring. BUT, I definitely prefer it to made up or trendy names, that's for sure. I do like many of its variations a lot, though, especially Moira.

Ruined... by decades of overuse. I do think it's dated, but that doesn't make it refreshing, because children don't only know their peers. The generations above her will be flooded with Mary's and she won't feel at all unique with the name. There are some gorgeous forms, such as Mariah, Marianna, Marielle ..._____________________________________________________________________"There are few more distressing sights than that

I prefer Maria. ^ ^ Mary sounds too old-fashioned for my liking.

I adore the name Mary, I always have. I don't find it boring and dated at all. To me, Mary is such a beautiful classic, that is somewhat underused these days. I actually don't like Maria at all or Marie, they just aren't my style. I love Miriam though, which obviously comes from Mary.

It's a nice classic, but I personally prefer Maria because of the way it looks and sounds. I don't think Mary will ever be completely outdated because it's such a traditional name with a long history.

I like Mary and nearly all forms of it. I think it is timeless. It is a family name for me and I want to use a form of it in the future.

Mary is a classic name and I think it can work for any age. I have a friend who is 20 by the name and I know a 4-year old by the name. Not to mention several older ladies.I also like Maria & Marie, personally more so than Mary. But all of them work well.

I think Mary is a such a lovely name! People say it's common, and because of that, people aren't using it, thus, making it not as common now. How's that for thinking? ;) Anyway, I think it's a great name - sweet, simple, it'll suit any age, and it will age well. I like Marie and Maria, but only as a middle names.

Dated!I don't like the name Mary in the least. I like Maria better, but not by much. Mary is so dated an makes me think of the 1800s or something. Miren is OK. I like the spelling Merry better, but have no clue why...

Mary is a classicand maybe not so popular now?In Sweden the form Maria is more popular. It has been so wildly popular that little girls are not named Maria so much now, it is more a mom's or a grandma's name. The same goes for Marie.Maja (pronounced as Maia) is an old Swedish form of Maria and is very popular for little girls nowadays. I like Molly, also getting popular in Sweden.I also love the more uncommon Miriam.

Mary, forms of Mary, etc.I like Mary on other people but would not personally use it. I find it classy but not quite interesting enough to attract me personally. I know a Mary or two and it has never seemed at all odd or out of place that it would be their name. I detest Marie and Maria for the same reasons that I don't like Lynn and Renee. I've almost heard them exclusively as middle name "filler," like middle names given to a child because that's what everyone else was getting and the parents didn't have enough imagination to branch out into anything else.I like names that are related to it or derived from it, though, more than Mary itself. Some of them would include Maire, Molly, and Miriam.

LOL...Maria is my first name, and definately isn't a filler. It was chosen because my father thought "Rosemaria" was too long. So you at least add one person to the "people called Maria NOT for filler purposes" list. ;-)

:-)Sorry about that! You are probably the first person I've talked to whose "Maria" has a story behind it. :-)

Don't worry - I don't mind you not liking my name, we're all different! :-) I agree, actually, about filler MNs, they get very boring - I haven't actually ever heard "Maria" as a MN, but there are a few people with "Marie" - my friend Lisa, for one. Actually, a lot of Lisas I've none have been called Lisa Marie. Hmm. Conspiricy! o_O

Mary is one of thise names, that no matter how old it is, it will always be pretty. I like a lot of variants of Mary, but Mary itself is so classic, and it's hardly ever used anymore. Maria is pretty, too.

I really don't like the name Mary at all. It's extremely boring to me. I think it's both classic and dated, though.
Variations of Mary I prefer :
Annemarie (I like it better, but don't like it a lot)
Mara
Mariah
Marie (first name only, due to it's chronic overuse in the middle name slot)
Mariel/Marielle/Mariella
Marisa
Marissa
Rosemary (see comment on Annemarie)

Yeah, I agree with you that its timeless and I think its a classic. I don't think that I would use it, though. I personally prefer Maria especially as a mn and I think I will use Maria as a mn for a daughter in the future. I love Mary though as a fn or mn, I just prefer Maria.
