It´s a Spanish surname. It comes from latin "ficus: fig" (the fruit). Then figuera> (the "f" turned into "h" in many spanish words) was higuera (fig tree). Probably, because of a spanish family who had many "fig trees" in her plantation or they trade with figs. The word "ficus" has the same origin that "ficatus: liver", because the ficus shape is similar to the human liver. Hope it helps.

A girl I know called Figuera but I think she's Madeiran or Portugese (same thing! almost).

Or Figueira maybe? Same meaning; compare Spanish Herrero ("blacksmith") and Portuguese Ferreiro.
