[Opinions] Mariah
Is the association with Mariah Carey too much?I've been digging it since seeing the movie Pride and Prejudice recently, and hearing it on one of the characters... someone very much NOT an underdressed pop diva. ;)I had a friend when I was little named Maria (pronounced like Mariah) and that's also a very positive association for me. I'd spell it with the H though, as that always caused her problems. (She was named after the song "They Call the Wind Maria." I don't know why the song is spelled that way though.)Anyway, any thoughts on the name?

I'm not a fan of it, but if I remember correctly, Maria is traditionally pronounced as Mariah in English, and the way most say it now is influenced by the Spanish/Italian/German prn.

Interesting, I didn't know that.

I like it. I don't immediately think of Mariah Carey because I already know someone else with the name, so she's the first thing I think of when I hear it. I think it's a very pretty name :)

I was thinking about this name last night while listening to Mariah Carey :). Yes, I think it has a strong association with her, but that wouldn't dissuade me from using it.

Nope, I don't think it's too much. It's not like Madonna or Cher. It's about as strong an association as, say, Whitney with W. Houston... it's about as rare, and the singer about as well-known. If I met a young Mariah I would not assume she was named for the singer. I'd think of the song, too, which I heard long before the singer showed up. I like the name a lot.

I actually really like the name. I think it's very pretty. Undoubtedly people will think of Mariah Carey when they hear it, I always do! BUT don't let that put you off the name, she's hardly around much anymore anyway.
