I've been liking a lot lately, but here are my questions:
1. Is it too hard to pronounce for an American?
2. Is it too hard to figure out how to pronounce for an American?
3. Middle name suggestions or first name suggestions?
4. Is the accent mark over the i required?
5. Does it seem pretentious, especially if the accent mark is kept?

- I can't speak for an American, but I'm British and I can pronounce it fine. AN-eye-EECE, basically.

- I dunno. I just know how to pronounce it. I think I first heard it as Liam (or Noel?) Gallagher's daughter's name.
3. Middle name suggestions or first name suggestions?
- I think it sounds best as a middle name. Bailey Anais comes to mind although I don't actually like Bailey. Also Anais Diana, Hollie Anais and Merryn Anais.
4. Is the accent mark over the i required?
- Not required, but I prefer it.
5. Does it seem pretentious, especially if the accent mark is kept?
- No.

Something French sounding might work. For example Anais Lucille or Anais Ophelia.

Tricky one. The accent will either aid or complicate the pronunciation of the name. For me it aids the pronunciation.

Not at all. I love the sound & look of it. It's gorgeous & reminds me of my favourite perfume "Anais Anais".

Sadly, yes. Most people don't know how to say it.

I think they do seem rather pretentious when most people don't know what they mean, and they aren't easily produced on American keyboards.

I'm not sure if I can help you with if it's hard to pronounce because of the fact that I have a friend named Anaïs and therefore am accustomed to it.
She spells it with the accent, Anaïs, and constantly has to correct people to put it there. Also she pronounces it ah-nah-EES. I had never heard it as ah-NAY-is until I came on here.
I don't think that the accent would be required at all. And I don't think that it's too pretentious at all.

I prn it ah nah EES, too
which is why Julia's comment about "anus" made no sense to me. I've never heard it prn any other way.

I love Anais, umlaut or no. The accent has a whiff of pretension because it links the name firmly to Anais Nin, a very cultured, important literary figure. Are you OK with these connotations? Also keep in mind that American women called Renee with the accent were probably thought pretentious at one time, but now we're all used to it.
To be honest, I think that Kr8tvleigh spelled names are pretty pretentious and hard to pronounce. For me, the question of whether or not any name is pretentious depends on what I think the name-giver is pretending at, and what brand of pretense I am particularly offended by.
Anais is gorgeous, strikingly feminine and strong. Anais Lydia? Anais Neve? Anais Vivian? Anais Susannah?

She was a little bit crazy, and the name is tied to her.
It's not pretentious with the accent mark, my SIL has one with Renee. However, it would be hard to pronounce. Thgerefore, my vote goes for Anais as a middle name. (No good at combos here)

I'm not an American so I can't really answer the first two questions (just to let you know)
1 No, I don't think it's too hard
2 No, if you tell them once they'll know, it's not a very difficult pronunciation imo
4 The accent isn't really required if you live somewhere where the accent isn't used a lot.
