[Opinions] Desert
Desert nn Desi - I've liked this name since 1990s, when my family visited Las Vegas, and we went to a museum that was about the Desert. I know it's not the greatest image for most people, I mean deserts are hot, and what not. I do think it makes a nice name, and I love deserts. I always had a fondness for the desert, my family used to go a lot to them, I find them facinating, and I love learning about them, and will always remember that memory. So with that said: Desert is for a girl, any MN suggestions? Or possible FNs? I would like the name to balance out Desert, but not be a filler name. Thank You.

Bad ideaA desert is a lousy namesake--it's hot, yes, but barren and dry and rather devoid of life. Also, with the accent on the second syllable it means to abandon.I also keep reading it as dessert, which is just asking for trouble.

I too have thought about the 'dessert' thing, but I pronounce them two different ways, so it doesn't make a huge connection for me. Dessert = DUH-ZURT
Desert - DEZ-urtActually deserts [depending on what type of desert] is not all barren, majority is,but some are not. Also, there's quite a bit of life in the desert, it just doesn't seem so. :)Thanks for the opnion though.

But that won't stop all the other people meeting your child from making the connection between desert and dessert. You won't be the only one to interact with her. And actually, desert is pronounced just like dessert when it's used as a verb.

Interesting [m]I still pronounce them slightly different, when I say it fast desert = dez-ert, and dessert = dez-urt, I dunno maybe it's just me? lol. I never asked for opinions on the name in the first place though, people just gave me opinions of hand when I never asked [lol], but that's okay. I just wanted MNs. I was just giving insight on why I liked the name. :)

Oops, you're right, you didn't ask for opinions on the name. But it is the Opinions Board. :-/

Desert Sahara is a little off the top
Desert Rose is the name of a beautiful gemstone that naturally forms to look like a sand-dusted rose
Desert Shadow is pretty
Desert Amaya could work
Desert Jewel?Hrmmm...

The first combo that came to mind was Desert Storm as in the war. Lol, sorry I can't think of any good combos. How about Desert Rain that would be pretty because it seldom rains in the desert so when it does its beautiful right!

Although I automatically think of things like Desert Rose and Desert Sky and Desert Rain, I think a mn with a similar meaning might go well. Oh dear, that didn't make sense. For example: Desert Lucia would have a cool meaning, but not sound so extreme. Also, it would be good for it to be a bit more feminine? Other possibilities that have attractive meanings paired with desert:
Desert Euthalia- "desert light"
Desert Aoibheann- "beautiful desert sheen"
Desert Caoimhe- "beautiful desert"
Desert Ianthe- "desert violet flower"
Desert Svetlana- "desert light"
Desert Leilani- "heavenly desert flowers"
Desert Isolde- "beautiful desert"
Desert Sabah- "desert morning"
Desert Susannah- "desert lily"
Desert Chara- "desert joy"
Desert Clare- "bright desert"
etc.?
Care for the idea?

I do like the 'idea' of it, if I still don't care for Desert as a name. But Desert Isolde, depending on how you prn. it, sounds like "dessert is old". :b

Yep...I may not be pronouncing it right, but that's how it sounds to me too. Didn't think of that.

I can't advocate its use, esp. as a fn, sorry. Desi would be a cute nn, but I'd rather see it for Desiree or even on its own than short for Desert. :-/ If anything, I can see it as a mn with a more name-y (meaning less word-namey :b) fn, like Madeline Desert, etc. Still nms, but better.
(edited: trouble with commas)

Sorry all I see is Desert as in deserting your post or Dessert as in pudding, neither association being particularly attractive.

I don't think it would be a great name to be honest.I can't think of any middle names. I keep coming up with things like Desert Rose but I think thats a bit silly.

I keep coming up with those type of combos too :(
