[Opinions] Virginia?
What do you think of Virginia?
I have a dear Aunt that my DH and I would like to honor and her given name is Virginia, she is called Jenny.
There are 2 "problems:"
1. I am not crazy about the name Virginia
2. We live in Virginia
Would it be too odd to have a child with the mn Virginia who lives in Virginia?
The other thing we have thought of, and interests us more, is to give her our favorite names and let her choose our childs name. I really like this idea.

As the mn, I don't think it's a big problem even though you live there. I live a 30-minute drive from GA and I know a few little Georgias who live in or very near the state and it doesn't seem to be an issue (don't know any Floridas, though :b). But if you don't like it enough to use it, you probably shouldn't. I personally don't like some of my family members' names but it's a bit of a tradition to use family names as mn's, and I care about them and esp. since it's a mn it doesn't bother me to use it. I also like Eliora's suggestion of Jenny, as either the fn or mn. If you don't love either of those ideas, letting her choose would be a great plan, I think. Good luck!
My friend Brooke was born in Virginia and her real name is Virginia so I think its just fine (she goes by Brooke to honor her late Uncle Brook so its not an issue of her thinking that being Virginia from Virginia is cheesy).
I also think that if she goes by Jenny you could use the name Jenny to honor her.

Why not Jenny?
However, I think letting her name your daughter is a really cool idea. While I like Virgnia, if you're not crazy about it, and you live there, I think it's best to not use it.

I love the name Virginia, so I think it's fine in either the fn or the mn spot. That said, I would never use a name I wasn't crazy about, not even to honor a beloved relative. If you don't love Virginia, I say don't use it. Your idea of letting her name your child from a short list of your favorites might make you happier in the long run than using a name you don't love.
I think you may be right.
I do not love Virginia and we do not have one girls name (which is what we would let her pick) that is our solid, favorite, #1.
If we let her pick the name I think we will use names we love that are not family names for both fn and mn. Although Annabel is on our list and my g-ma's mn was Belle.

I agree with Dr. Pepper, there's nothing wrong with the mn Virginia! I think that's a better idea than having her choose the name, because even if they are your favorite names, she may choose one that isn't your favorite of the favorites, or maybe you had another one in mind. I think maybe letting her help in the naming process and taking her opinions would help too!
I think as a middle name it is fine. And I wouldn't worry about living in Virginia. It is so nice to honor someone.
