[Facts] Meaning/origin of RANGEL
We are in the process of adopting a five year old boy from foster care. His name is RANGEL. His birth parents were both from the Dominican Republic. I have met a couple of people who have heard the name before in the Hispanic community, but no one knows what it means or where it came from. A school project about names and their origins is coming up.

Good afternoon! I came about this thread while researching my childs last name for his school project. I wanted to add that I have my children's ancestry DNA info and they are mostly Spanish. I am indigenous to the Americas so I was able to pinpoint what was mine and what was my husbands origins fairly easily. My husband like others on this thread is light skinned with green eyes and was born in Mexico along with both his parents and grandparents. Other than that, his roots are also lost to history and time.
My family originates from the southeastern region of Brazil. It's difficult to pinpointing the exact origin of the surname Rangel. There's a multitude of conflicting information available online, making it challenging to determine the authentic origin.
I cant believe this thread is still going. I think its great that others are still curious about their surnames. I landed here on this page (16 years later then my original post) was because I was watching 1492 (great movie by the way) and one of the characters name was Luis Santangel. When spoken in spanish, the T is almost silent. Coincedence, you never know.
its a name to be proud of, though it may be common lots of people still haven't heard of it..
I too have been told its from France/ Germany ...
A royalty name so don't defile it...
God Bless all the Rangels !!!

The information I have is limited, but for the most part fairly accurate. The surname RANGEL originated from Germany (although it has been noted in France as well). When pronounced by Germans the first letter "R" is almost growled when pronouncing the last name. The last name was noted as early as the year 1100. From there the name was then noted in Spain around 2600 where Maria and Jaun Rangel were taken in by part of Spains royal families. The earliest settlers in North America with this last name were Franz, Jacob and Veronica Rangel in around 1550. They settled in Texas.
My father is originally from San Antonio, Texas and I am from California. For a trip, we both flew to San Antonio where I decided to look in a phone book to see how common my last name was. It turns out there was about 4 pages of Rangels in Texas. It was as commen as Wilson or Smith. It seems that are roots in North America begin in Texas and flow move towards South America, mostly Mexico.

RANGEL is also common as a first name in Bulgaria. Some say it means archangel in archaic Bulgarian.
Mark...you are on the right track as far as where the surname RANGEL originated from. I have tracked the surname RANGEL as far back as 1049. Yes the surname RANGEL was traced in Texas (USA), Mexico, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, and even Austria.
Radbot, Count of Habsburg, also known as Radbot of Klettgau, was Graf of the county of Klettgau on the High Rhine in Swabia. Radbot was one of the progenitors of the Habsburg dynasty, and he chose to name his fortress Habsburg. He was born in 985 AD.
When you look through the history of.....lets say the King of Spain...you will find that the past Kings/Queens/Dukes/Counts (etc.) had relationships/marriage's with other royals/people from different countries. Not all of the countries now days were countries when back in those times.
In one way or another...we all might be related, lol.

My dads a rangel a lot of our family is from guanajuato, celaya and San felipe. I live in the U.S.

My dad was Joe Rangel my grandfather Fedicio Rangel my name is Robert Joe Rangel just looking who is my family
i’m sorry but ur wrong :/ my last name is rangel and it’s from my moms dad and he came from mexico so ya try again.
I am Neri Rangel Díaz. Alright let me set you straight real quick Kaitlyn. You got you’re name from you’re parents who lived in Mexico. And they got it from their parents/your grandparents who may or may not have lived in Mexico. And they got it from their grand parents/you’re great great grand parents got it from their parents/you’re great great great grandparents. Now consider this where 5 generations in about +or- 500 years of family lines. 500 years ago all native people from Mexico were mayen and Aztec. Those are natives who did not speak Spanish they spoke dialect and rangel is not a dialect last name it is spanish wich Caim from Spain so you’re ansestors are most likely European imagrents from Spain not Hispanic natives. And if you want to go even farther into it. The Spañirds blood was greatly influenced and mixed with the French because Spanish language is derived from French language so the rangel blood can be traced as far back as France and maybe even further but I have reached the extent of my knowledge. So in conclusion no
“my last name is rangel and I got it from my mom and dad and he came from Mexico so ya try again”
is not correct trace the blood lines that caried the last name Rangel before you or you’re parents and you’ll see where you’re blood, nationality, culture and name is really from so ya Kaitlyn try again.

Have you even read any of these past post?
Just because he was born in Mexico doesn’t make the last name originated in Mexico. So yeah you need to try again

Just because your grandpa came from Mexico as my parents and grandparents did does not mean it didn’t originate elsewhere hundreds of years ago like Germany/spain. I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss Marks info.
Could that be because the name comes from Spain as Mark said? Rangel/Rengel is recorded widely in Spain, and it's far more likely that the Spanish brought the name to both Mexico and Texas (formerly part of Mexico) than the other way round. Nor does the fact that it is recorded widely in Spain mean it doesn't have a Franco-German origin — Spain has had a succession of Germanic rulers who brought a welter of Germanic names to Spain. Rengel appears to be one of them.
Wow. My name is actually "Rangel" as you can see. My parents came with an idea of a name angel and just added letter R. They thought of adding R which came from my father's nickname (Russel) I can't see myself being with the same people same as my name cause I haven't encountered one. I feel myself being unique and different. My last name is not also as common from the other people. My family clan is Ilustre. I am a filipino.
12/21/2003 is my birthdate. I can't believe its a coincidence being here.

My Husband Albert Rangel and I are from Houston. He knows of his immediate family but not extended family such as Aunts, Uncles and cousins. My husband was from his fathers second marriage and by that time my father-in-law was much older. I'm sure there is more family out there we have not meet yet. My mother's maiden name is also Rangel. I have lots of relatives on my side that can be traced back unlike my husband.
My Bulgarian friend has a brother called Rangel... Maybe its Bulgarian
Yep, it's used in Bulgaria too :P
As far as I know, it goes like this Archangel -> Arangel -> Rangel
Sorry but that sounds more like wishful thinking. Most likely the name is a spanish version of the name Wrangell
Hello,
My grandmother from my dad's side was a Rangel. I know that their grandparents came from Spain and settle in the Andes mountains in Venezuela ( the part of the mountains that end in Venezuela) It is a fairly common last name in Venezuela, but I was told that is a derivation of the German name Wrangell. I currently live in the USA, and due to the current affairs in Venezuela, I have not been able to do more research. I will post any info I find.
