[Opinions] Anakin
Okay... so I kind of watched Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace the other day. It was the first time I had ever really watched (or at least payed attention to) any of the Star Wars movies and I realized I really like the name Anakin... it's so cute! I like it so much, almost to the point of wanting to use it. Am I being unrealistic? It's still too early to tell for me, maybe two weeks from now I'll totally forget about the name. Or maybe slowly it will move up to being one of my favorites. So, what do you think of this name? If I do use it, should I keep it as just a mn? And do you think theres potential for teasing for a kid named Anakin? I mean, it probably wont be another ten years till I have kids. But I'm guessing Star Wars will still be well-known then. So any opinions on the name or this entire situation would be great! Thank you.

I love it, too, but would never use it. (spoiler for Star Wars)I definitely think there will be teasing and also Anakin Skywalker is a pretty tragic character. I mean, he loses everything, goes to the dark side, becomes evil and kills almost all the Jedi in the galaxy. Personally, I don't think he would make the greatest namesake. Still a cool name, though. Edited to add spoiler tag. I can't imagine anyone not knowing how Star Wars ends but you never know. Better safe than sorry.

I love the name Anakin, and I love Star Wars. I wouldn't use Anakin though, except on a pet, just like I wouldn't use Neo or Morpheus, or Atrayu, or other made-up or original names from well-known fantasy movies. Anakin will always be a GP of mine though.

Atreyu and Morpheus aren't made up.

I love Atreyu *smiles*, sorry I had to say that

...but they are "original"

No, Morpheus is from Greek MythologyMorpheus - click the link :)

And from other areas of pop culture...This Morpheus existed years before Larry Fishburne's: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dream_%28DC_Comics%29Array

I want to like the name, I do! I just can't get over the fact that Anakin becomes Darth Vader.

Are you going to call him Vader when he misbehaves :) I would think that his parents looooooooved Star Wars. I hear it on the playground - including the nn Ani just like in the movie. It seems like a trendy name. In ten years, though, perhaps it will be new again.

Hm...I'd save it for the MN slot, because I do suspect he would get teased. Even removing the Star Wars influence, the natural nickname is Annie. Strong manly name that...which could get him teased. (I couldn't take the new movies seriously for a variety of better reasons, but the fact that I cracked up whenever Padme addressed him in 1 and parts of 2...even if it was intended as a joke.) It's an okay name, just really strongly iconic. It's sort of like naming a kid Oprah in my opinion...people hear the name and have one association. If you're okay with everyone associating the kid with Star Wars, then that's fine.Although? Aside from the reference to SW, I'm also not sure it passes the Supreme Court Justice / Doctor / President / Grandpa test.

I love it! And question...First off, would you be using it on a boy or a girl?Second, I don't really see why anyone would tease your kid for being name Anakin, and I know that very few kids in my school have any interest in Star Wars. In ten years, I definitely don't think your kid will have any problems. I love this name! Although, I am having a hard time seeing an eighty year old Anakin...

Well, I would like to mention that Star Wars is very pop culture and most people have atleast heard of Star Wars if not seen a few or all of the movies. Personally, I don't know anyone that doesn't know that Anakin was part of Star Wars and most people know that he eventually turns into the villian of the series. I still love the name Anakin mind you, but I definately think there will be teasing potential for a very long time. Not only do people who grew up in the 70's, 80's, 90's, and today know what Star Wars is, it was such a big thing that I think people in the future will know Star Wars as well. I think most Star Wars names are off limits if you want a "normal" or "non-teasable" name.
I do remember hearing that Anakin is a legitimate name in some Norse or Scandinavian areas but I can't find where I found that at the moment. I like it for that reason, but I would never use it.

Oh, it'd be for a boy.And that's good to hear, I wasn't sure if the name would have some sort of teasing potential. And I know what you mean, I guess it doesn't seem that great on someone older. But I don't think that would be a big deal. The name is just so wonderful! Thanks so much! :-D

I get the appeal. It is very cute and if it wasn't a Star Wars character I would have it down. BUT Star Wars isn't going away any time soon. There is definite teasing potential. Also, I just don't think it will age that well. It doesn't pass the 'title test' where I put titles in front of it. For eg, President Anakin Jones? Judge Anakin Jones? Doctor Anakin Jones? No thanks.

That's true it doesn't seem that... professional or something. I might consider it for more of a mn.
