I've always thought Gray sounds gloomy and damp, to be honest, like a dreary, drizzly day. I prefer it for a boy, but for either gender I think it's best as a nn. That way, if your child has a sunnier disposition, he/she has other options. Grace or Graham, nn Gray, for example.
