Help[Opinions] Sybil????
A few weeks ago, i was doing a play with my friends. Well, my friend's little sister (who is SO cute) was playing the role of the maid. I told her that she could look in my Name book and pick out a name. Right away she chose Sybil
Ever since then for some insane reason, this name has grown on me. I used to hate it with everything in me, but now it;s almost one of my top 10 favorite names!! ;) How strange is that? I like the meaning of the name as well; "prophet"
So, what do YOU think of Sybil? cute? ugly? beautiful? classy? Weird? What r some good combos??

I like it a lot, although I slightly prefer Sibyl. The biggest negative (for me, anyway) is that I do associate it with Sybil Dorsett, the woman with MPD. "Sybil," the movie based on her life, scared me half to death when I was younger.
Because of her story, I've heard Sybil used as slang for a woman who is so difficult and unpredictable she acts as though she has multiple personalities. It takes some of the shine off the name for me.

I don't like it. All I think of is Sybil Fawlty from the show "Fawlty Towers!"

I kind of like it. I find it very dignified. It reminds me of a proper old lady, but I think if a few people used it could be "loosened up" a bit and be a very beautiful name for a lady of any age.

I prefer it spelled Sibyl (my grandma's name). The name is ok and I like the history behind it. I like the Greek Sibylla quite a bit.

I dislike it. Not only does it remind me of the Sally Field movie where she has multiple personalities, but I find it a tad ugly, too.

I used to associate it with the true story about the lady Sybil who had 13 different personalities (multiple personality disorder) and, therefore, it kind of freaked me out. But, as an adult, I have a friend named Sybil Olivia XXX who is perky, smart and beautiful and I have since come to think of the name for a stronger, yet lady-like woman who is very smart and sophisticated yet also down-to-earth. I like it. And, I think Sybil Olivia is a nice combo. So is Sybil Isabella. Best of Luck!
PS: I like the spelling Sybil (whether it's the "original" or not. Sibyl looks misspelled to me). :)

I think it is really nice, not something I'd probably use, but its refreshing to see, ages well and it seems really retro :)
It's similarity to Isabel also makes me wonder why it isn't more popular.

I imediately think of Sybill Trelawney from Harry Potter and Cybill Shepherd. I really don't care for it.

I love it. It reminds me of the girl-friend in "Chariots of Fire," a beautiful, fashionable women of the early 1920's. Very classy.
But I only like it spelled Sibyl, the original way. Everyone confuses it with Sylvia and puts the "y" before the "i." But it really should be Sibyl. [Don't even get me started on what Ms. Sheppard's (sp?) parents did to the name . . . .]
