It's been the number one boys name in England for about the last 10 years, so personally, I'm bored of it.
I don't understand why people think of it as a nickname, though? It's no shorter than the name John and doesn't really sound anything like it, even if it was used as a nickname for John in the past.
I say, if you like the name Jack use it, not John, otherwise it could be really confusing for people.
