Robert is my grandfather and uncle's name, also the name of someone I was into in highschool, which has put a damper on the name for me.
I love Genevieve, even more after watching Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, in which Catherine Devenue plays a girl named Genevieve.
I love Magdalene, Judith, Laurence, and Xavier, as well.
Jonas isn't really doing anything for me, but I used to love it.

Robert
I didn't start to like Robert as much as I do now until I met one that went by his full name. For as popular as the name might be on the charts, everyone seems to be a Rob or a Bob. So a Robert, no nickname, is something that stood out to me. I like its Germanic sound very much. :-)
Genevieve is okay. It's nothing that I've ever gotten into but it's pretty enough. Kind of too something for me--too fussy or prissy, maybe. A little bit of an eye-roller. But not ugly by any means. If it somehow went along with Magdalene, either being a combo or in a sibset together, it would be a match I couldn't describe any more kindly than as highfalutin.
Off topic, but I knew a sibset once of Aaron, William, Genevieve, and Charles. Of course they were Aaron, Bill (very funny on a five year old), Genevieve with her full name, and Charlie, but their full names were great together.

I like Magdalene very much and considerably more than Genevieve if you put them side by side. I think it has a lot more punch than Genevieve even if they're aesthetically similar in the sense that they're long and, IMO, have a similar sense of femininity.
I agree about the baggage thing, at least my interpretation of what you're saying. :-) I think there's something distinctly different about it from Miriam and Margaret. As old as Magdalene is, its popularity has apparently not risen above "rock bottom" in decades so it doesn't really have any personal associations for me. The only figure that it does bring to mind is Mary Magdalene and she's been getting fairly favorable press lately.
I'd like Lydia Magdalene. ;-)
ETA: I like Miriam and Margaret anyway. I still want someone else to adopt Miriam Noor.

Both are lovely, great names! Robert is a name that I often here as a middle name for little boys, but hardly ever as a first name.
I was looking at your other favourites and I have to say, I'm really liking Genevieve Laurence (though I know you're using it as a male name). The combo just looks so very French and I love the French pronunciation of Laurence.
Genevieve and Magdalene would look fab as sister-names, too.

I really like Genevieve. I like it with both the English and the French pronunciation. Many people say they only like it with the French pronunciation, and that the English pronunciation butchers it. I don't agree, and I think that it would be difficult to get English speakers to consistently use the French pronunciation. So I personally wouldn't use it if I didn't like the English pronunciation.
Robert is a name for which I like the nickname much more than the actual name. I like Rob, but not Robert. The "bert" ending puts it too close to names like Herbert and Egbert for me.
I don't like Judith or Jonas. No particular reason I can give, just that I don't like the sound of them. I particularly dislike the nickname Judy. The others I'm pretty neutral about.

Robert - too old fashioned for my taste.
Magdalene - it has a nice ring to it.
Jonas - love it. very popular though.
Laurence - love it. I love the French Laurent too.
Xavier - I think it's great, but I can't stand when people pronounce it wrong. It's just a shame.

I don't know why, but I dislike Genevieve. Perhaps because the nn Gen is somewhat inevitable (I know two who go by Gen, though I don't know if it was their choice or not). Anyway, I think it would go well with this list. While I love Robert, it seems a bit popular with the rest, but I wouldn't advise against using it because it does complement the others quite nicely. :)
