[Opinions] Nathaniel
I've been thinking about the name more and more lately, and have discovered I don't want to scrap it. Here's my question. If I were to call my son Nathaniel with no NN (which is a very likely scenario), would it really be awful that my brother-in-law shared the name? He goes by Nat 24/7.I'm hesitant, mainly because I don't like either him or my sister - but that said we would have little contact with them. My sister and I haven't said more than two words to each other in nearly six years, and it's not likely to change. So: Is it okay, or isn't it? Would it cause more drama between us? I honestly don't care, but she's a drama queen and the whole family would hear about it.

I agree with most of the others. If you like this name so much that even though there is the negative association with your brother-in-law, you still want to use it, go for it.

I love the name Nathaniel (no nn). I say go for it. The only problem I can see is if she wants to name her future son Nathaniel. I know my cousin was offended when another family member used her dad's mn for their son's mn, although I think she was being a bit dramatic.

I'd agreeI know that my SIL was planning on giving one of her triplets the middle name Michael after her father - even though her twin had already used it. I don't really see it as that big of an issue. They're not siblings.

Well, I'm not a big fan of repeating names already in the family. And the fact that you don't even like or talk to your brother-in-law, I don't see why you would want to give your child his name. But I do love the name Nathaniel, so what about a mn?

I don't see a problem. Are you sure she would even mind? If she told you that she wants to use it for a son of theirs one day, then I could see the problem -- and I would be on here "side." Silly as it may sound, I have to feel for a couple who want to call their child after one of them, only to have it used by so close a relative as a sibling. Absent that specific scenario, I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks.I honestly suspect that now that I've moved across country I'll have little to do with my family. Even with two Nathaniels it wouldn't really matter - they would never see one another.

Hahaha... well, my future brother-in-law would be called Nate, and I still think I might use this name, So I'm going to have to say, no, it wouldn't be too bad.I wouldn't worry about your sister, she would cause a little drama over it, people would roll their eyes (how could they not stand up for cute little Nathaniel), and then it would be done.

If you like the name that much and you don't have a problem with it (even if other members of your family might) and you're willing to overlook the drama that other family members might stir up, then I don't see a big problem with using it. It's a nice name, and while not a top ten most popular name, it's common enough that I wouldn't think it unusual if I happened to hear of two people within the same family with the same name. In short, I say go for it.

Thanks.Plus, I could always pretend that I thought he was Nathan, not a Nathaniel. :-D
