[Opinions] WDYTO Jethro?
I've recently read a book with a main character named Jethro. Before reading this book, I neither liked nor disliked the name. But now, after reading and enjoying the book and the character, I've come to really like this name. In fact, I like it so much that it is now on my top ten list for favorite boy names. I also like it's meaning "abundance" and the fact that it is a Biblical name. [Jethro was the father of Zipporah (another name I love) in the book of Exodus.]So, what do you think of the name Jethro? Do you feel that a child named this would be picked on for any reason? Thank you very much for any comments or opinions!

Firstly because I'm British I think of this guy...http://www.gravesham.gov.uk/media/images/h/e/JethroLarge_1.gif He's a comedian here, not funny IMO, lol. The name's too tied in with him for me personally to take it seriously!Having said that, I do know a Jethro here who is about 15, and he's fine with his name :)

I've liked this name for quite some time now and I too like the meaning and the fact that it's Biblical. I don't think a Jethro would be picked on any more or less than any other child. All in all, quite a nice name and not one you hear everyday!

I like the name, unfortunatly all I can think of is the Beverly Hillbillies. I don't think a child could get away with that name in my area without being teased. I'm from a redneck/hillbilly town and any child named Jethro would be teased all the time.Sorry, I wish I had better things to say about it. It's a nice name, but too stereotypical.

Thank you for your opinion. I personally have never watched the Beverly Hillbillies and I think many people in my generation haven't either. Maybe (when I'm older and actually have children-I'm almost 18), most people won't automatically think of the Beverly Hillbillies because most of them wouldn't have seen the show (at least where I live). I know my parents have seen the show, but no of no one my age in the area that does. I don't know, but since children are far into the future for me, I don't have worry about those things yet.

I don't know, man. I'm seventeen and the first and strongest association I get is Beverly Hillbillies. Then Jethro Tull, and I've never listened to Jethro Tull. So it's inescapably hickish to me.It's neat sounding though, I love every phonetic aspect of it. It would make a good middle name.

What I meant was that when I have children, other children his/her age will not make the association. Their parents may, but not necessarily the children. It is the kids who generally make fun of other kid's names, not the parents.

Jethro isn't my favorite biblical name because of its hillbilly connotations, but I don't think it's bad. Jethro is a milion times better than the endless variations on "ayden" that a lot of people are naming their kids these days. No, no kid named Jethro is going to get picked on because of his name. It's not that terrible.

I could really get into Jethro but I confess I think "Beverly Hillbillies" every time I hear it. (Ditto with Jemima which I love; I think pancakes/syrup with that one). That being said, I think a boy named Jethro could definitely get away with it today, I really do. It has a great sound. I don't think he'd get picked on for his name more than any other child.

I prefer the Hebrew original form Yitro. But it's not really my thing...If you name for the PERSON, then he had many other names to choose from (much like Moses had 8, Miriam 5 if I remember well...).

I love Jethro! It'so handsome and strong. I always think of Jethro Gibbs from NCIS (TV show), whom I love. I hope to use the name myself someday.

I agree, love the show and the actor, so the name has grown on me.

I really dislike that name. It makes me think of Jethro from the Beverly Hillbillies, and therefore it sounds like a hillbilly name to me. Which I know doesn't make sense, since it's a biblical name, but oh well.

...TullI think of Jethro Tull, whom I adore! But hate the name Jethro, I'd use the name Tull/y for them. Sorry but it sounds harsh.
