The Barlett family now boasts 9 children. Their last son, Paul Hiram Barlett, was born three years ago, on July 21, 1912.
Jack is now forty. He has been practicing medicine for nearly 15 years. He is well respected and keeps up on the latest surgical techniques. In fact, he recently traveled to London to observe a new surgical procedure. While in London, he discovered just how serious the war situation was there. He hopes that the US will not get involved, but knows that if they do, he will enlist as a medic. Jacob, Jack's assistant, is now 20 and going to medical school in Boston. He hopes to come back and become a practice partner of Jack's.
Mary has been doing well too. She has been volunteering at the local church and enjoys visiting the ladies around town. She has perfected her apple pie and strawberry jam recipes and has won many prizes at fairs around the county.
Jonny is fifteen. He is intent on finishing school and going to college to become a doctor. While Jacob is away at college, he has apprenticed himself to his father on weekends and after school. Jonny is quite popular among his friends and is growing into a handsome young man.
Matt is fourteen. He still has varied interests, but has started to come out of his shell and make more friends. Matt is very hard to read. He has mentioned wanting to go to sea, wanting to be a veterinarian, and wanting to be a furniture craftsman. No one knows exactly what he'll do. Matt gets along well with all of his siblings and they confide a lot in him (even Jonny).
Lily is twelve. She is not quite finished with school, but is ready to be a grown up. She wants to own a bakery and possibly a catering business. Lily has developed an extravagant flair and she enjoys defying convention. She wants to be rich and semi-famous and wishes she could travel and try her hand at acting.
Rube is eleven. He still just follows the flow. He has many friends and makes new ones all the time because of his demeanor. He still enjoys going to school and has developed an interest in business. One day he dreams of owning a shipping business.
Lizzy is ten. She is still very beautiful and is quite aware of that fact. She is quite a flirt and talks of getting married even at her young age. She tired of school by the second grade and would like to just be a member of high society so that she can "sit around all day and be waited on". She is good at the piano.
Rita is eight. She loves to be outdoors and helps take care of the animals more than any of the younger children. She has declared that she wants to be a veterinarian. Rita is very bright and enjoys every aspect of school and learning. She is good tempered and hates discipline.
Lijah is six. He is always on the move. He has done well in his first year of school, though the teacher says that he is a little too energetic. Lijah is especially good at drawing and doodling. It is the one thing he will sit and do for hours on end, especially if he's outside.
Zeke is five. He was a little upset when Paul was born because he wasn't the baby anymore, but he has grown out of that. He is a skinny little boy who can look quite like an orphan at times. He likes to explore and be alone. This combination has led to more than one family-wide search for him. Usually he just takes little walks in the woods or follows an older sibling into town.
Paul is three. He loves to pretend and talk to the cats and dogs. He follows Matt or Rube around most of the time. He's also quite attached to Rita. Paul's favorite food is eggs and he requests them every morning for breakfast, without fail.
