Kane Foster is twenty-three. He has been interested in ice hockey since before he could walk. He's been skating since the age of four and playing competitively since the age of nine. His childhood love of hockey has now been transferred into adulthood. Kane now plays professional ice hockey for the New York Rangers. He's been in the NHL since the age of 19 and hasn't looked back.
Kane grew up in inner-city Pittsburgh (not always the best place to be). His mother died when he was ten. She was diagnosed with HIV/AIDS when he was eight. Fortunately, Kane was born before she contracted the infection. Kane didn't know of his father until his mother's death. After she died, he and his two sisters (Kerry, 7 and Kaylee, 4) went to live with their father in Minneapolis. Kane loved being in a city where it was cold enough to play hockey year round, but it wasn't always fun and games. Kane and his sisters were left alone much of the time, as their father was an aspiring businessman who worked long hours. Kaylee, diagnosed with HIV/AIDS at age two passed away when Kane was sixteen (and she was 10). Her death devastated Kane, and he has never fully recovered. Kane and Kerry were very close until Kerry turned 14 (Kane was 17 then). Kane had dreams of getting to the NHL and Kerry was just coming into womanhood, but was surrounded by boys most of the time. Things got worse until she took off on her 18th birthday. Kane has regretted not doing more to help his sister. His father has never seemed to care either way. Kane now keeps in touch with his father (and Kerry, when he can find her). Last he heard, his father was working his way up the corporate ladder and had moved to Los Angeles. Kerry was the single mother of two young children and living in Minneapolis somewhere. Kane cares a lot for his family, but doesn't know the best way to help them.
Shortly after Kane's nineteenth birthday, he met Sophie.
Sophie is twenty-one. She loves everything to do with animals. She grew up on a farm and always adored the horses. She has been riding since the age of six and competing since she was ten. Sophie now competes internationally on her Thoroughbred crosses Obsidian (TB/Quarter Horse), Skylark (TB/German Warmblood), Cobalt (TB/Standardbred), Roxie (TB/Irish Sport Horse), and Tomahawk (TB/Paint Horse).
Sophie grew up in sunny California. She grew up in a happy family who was very prosperous. Her father was a Thoroughbred racehorse magnate and owned some of the best horses of the time. Her mother was a pediatric nurse who always took time to care for Sophie and her four older siblings (Jaquie, now 29; Annie, now 28; Bryan, now 26; and Zach, now 24). Sophie has always been priviledged to have just about anything her heart desired. In elementary school, she received a French Saddle Pony whom she named Ginger. Ginger was her first competition horse and served her faithfully until Sophie outgrew her at the age of 13. At that time, she leased a few bigger horses, looking for just the right one. She finally discovered that off-the-track Thoroughbreds suited her very well. She then undertook the rehabilitation of two horses that her father owned--Scarletman and James Bond. Scar and JB proved to be great competitors until they passed away at the ages of 21 and 23 respectively. In high school, Sophie began researching horses and tried to figure out the best combinations of breeds that would produce competitors. She has always been partial to Thoroughbreds and uses them in most of her crosses. The horses she competes on now are products of her research in high school. She also has two other crosses in training that she hopes to compete on (Jewel, a TB/Arabian and Benji, a TB/Akhal-Teke). Sophie decided to go to college in North Carolina to study Equine Business at St. Andrew's Presbyterian College. Now, Sophie is not a Presbyterian, but she enjoys the program very much. She hopes to one day own a Thoroughbred cross breeding facility.
When Sophie was 17 (and just before she turned 18), she moved to North Carolina for school. She met Kane soon after.
Kane and Sophie met at a hockey game, of course. At the urging of some friends, Sophie went to a game. They had managed to get some tickets to a dinner with the team after the game. At the pregame skate, Sophie went down to the glass to see if she could get a puck from one of the players. Kane, who never was one for pregame skates, saw a girl standing at the glass and decided that he would be nice and give her one of their pucks. Kane picked up a puck and skated over.
Sophie was the prettiest girl he had ever seen. Her light brown hair seemed to glow and her blue eyes sparkled with pleasure. Kane handed her the puck, then quickly skated away. He knew that he wanted to see the girl again, but didn't think that there was any possiblity. He continued with the skate like nothing happened and tried to concentrate on the game. He ended up thinking about Sophie the entire game and narrowly escaped getting caught making a dumb play several times.
To Sophie, the player that handed her the puck was very cute, but just like all the other macho guys out there. He had unkempt dark brown hair and mischevious looking green eyes. Sophie smiled when he gave her the puck, then retreated to her seat. There was something about the man that intrigued her, but she wasn't sure what. She watched him closely throughout the game and decided that she would like to formally meet him.
After the game, Sophie made her way over to where Kane was sitting with some teammates. After a few awkward moments, Kane introduced himself and his teammates and Sophie introduced herself. She had a leisurely conversation with Kane and his buddies. Before she left, she slipped her number into Kane's hand. He left her a message three days later. They started dating the next week.
Dating was rather difficult, since Sophie lived over an hour from where Kane lived, and their schedules were really crazy. However, they always found time for each other. Kane proposed to Sophie after they had dated for two and a half years. He was twenty two and she was twenty. They were married seven months later, on March 28th. Kane and Sophie have now spent the better part of a year together and are very content. They live twenty minutes outside of Raleigh, on a lovely plot of farmland where Sophie keeps her horses (she still competes) and is contemplating starting up her breeding business once her mares Skylark and Roxie retire. Kane is now in his fourth year with Carolina and he is quickly establishing himself as a leader for the team.
All done! Thanks for taking time to read this!
