Last Name: Cohen
DH: Oliver Eduard "Ollie" (27)
DW: Sarah Anne "Saranne" (28)
AD: Susannah Rebecca "Annie" (12)
AS: Matthew Henry "Mattie" (9)
AD: Josephine Juliette "Josie" (6)
DS/DD: Frederick James "Rickie", Naomi Margaret "Nai" (5)
DD: Elisabeth Rosalind "Beth"Three years have passed since Saranne and Ollie adopted Annie, Mattie and Josie. Their addition to the family was the best decision they could have made. The joy of caring for them and seeing them grow emotionally, spiritually and physically is indescribable. Saranne and Ollie see the children as their own although they are aware that the elder children may not feel comfortable with calling them Mammy and Daddy. Because of this they allowed them to choose what title to use.Annie retreived some of her lost childhood playing with the other young girls of her own age in their neighbourhood and church. Although she still at times she has the ability to see and understand situations with a wisdom and clarity far beyond her years. Annie has chosen to refer to Saranne and Ollie as Mam and Dad. She told them that this was fine with her as she knew that is what they have become. And besides she used to call her parents Mamma and Papa so calling them that has not infringed on her original relationship with her birth parents. She is very aware that Ollie and Saranne have not tried to replace her parents. Rather be there for her and care for her without interfering with her memories of them.Mattie has remained angry at his parents and God in the years following the adoption. However his heart is softening to the Lord and seeking answers to the emptiness inside him. Their family and friends spend a lot of time in prayer for him, asking the Lord to remove the veil that Satan has used to blind him! It is such a joy to hear for Saranne and Ollie to hear him address them as "Mammy" and "Daddy" from time to time. A rare but increasing occurance. Josie is just as sweet as ever. She still loves to hug and cuddle and remain close to her new parents. The shock of loosing her birth parents has made her a little timid and unsure. She prefers to spend her time near to her parents as much as possible. Scared of them leaving her. She still only paritally understands what happened to her parents. She does not remember suffering from Typhus and remembers little of her time at the orphanage although she has been blessed with memories of life with her parents. It was a great encouragement for Saranne and Ollie when she had a sleepover at a friends house a few weeks ago! The first time she would even consider such a thing! They are hoping that it is the start of the end of her absolute dependence on them for feelings of security and the beginning of her healing!Rickie and Nai are now 5 years old and growing fast. Rickie is the spitting image of his mother and Nai the spitting image of her father! They are very lively children and love to spend time climbing trees, exploring and building dens- reminding Saranne and Ollie of their own childhood. The twins are very close and spend many hours playing together! They have had no trouble learning to share together. Josie is very close in age to the twins and at times it oftern seems as though we have triplets and not twins! The twins were very accepting of the additions to our family. In the early days they had a few issues on whether or not they were still loved to the same extend. However, Saranne and Ollie did not allow the ideas to linger and set them straight as soon as they recognised the signs of insecurity and jealousy. Once these obstacles were overcome they welcomed the threesome. Infact I think they quite like having a sister to play with and especially love having an older sister and brother to spoil them!!Earlier this year Saranne and Ollie were blessed with the arrival of their daughter Beth. It was a joyful time as Saranne was starting to worry that she would not be able to have any more children due to the trauma of carrying the quads. The pregnancy was a breeze compared to the previous one and she experienced no complications at all! Hallelujah! The first few weeks were tense as we went to ultrasounds to check for the presence of more multiples! They were very relieved to have a singleton pregnancy. (Not that multiples would have been unwanted- just safer.) The doctors kept a close eye on Saranne throughout the pregnancy and everything went according to the textbook ideal pregnancy! Beth weighed 8.11 at birth!! It was so different caring for a normal baby (in weight) and not having to wait for her to leave the NICU!! The difference in her infant hood and that of the twins is amazing!Beth is now 4 months old and a beautiful baby. She has lovely blue eyes and her head is covered with golden curls. She smiles and laughs and rarely cries at all! Her big brothers and sisters are thrilled with her. There are too many arms in the family wanting to hold her!! She was named for her maternal grandmother who passed away earlier in the year. This was a sad yet joyful time. "To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord" We felt it would be nice to honour her with Beth's name as she never met her 6th grandchild (although she did know of her impending arrival)Saranne and Ollie have bought a small holding now, they own 2 milk cows, 10 hens (and one cockrel) and a shetland pony. They also grow all their own vegetables. Each child (except Beth of course) is allowed to choose a vegetable and grows it. Depending of their age they have varing amounts of help! Each child also has their own chores to do- caring for the animals and gardens. Also the cleaning and cooking in the house. The 3 eldest girls are learning to cook! Annie is becoming a lovely little cook! She is able to make a simple meal with just a little imput from Saranne. Josie and Nai are still on the cookie and cake making stage but are making some lovely little delicitacies! All the children are homeschooled now. This is because Saranne remembers her own bad experiences as a child and feels that it would be best to oversee her childrens education. Ensuring they learn all that they need to know (at their own rate) in the way that she feels is best to teach them! All the children are above the national average for their agegroup. They spend 2 hours studying in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon Monday to Friday (although this is sometimes flexible) and at least 2 hours at somepoint on a Saturday. However the Saturday education is more of a fun style learning- usually a trip or personal project of interest to the child. Saranne's days are very full what with caring for 6 children and educating 5 of them. The housework and meals and all the many other tasks that a mother and housewife has to do! She loves her life however and would not change it for the world! She also still tries to find as much freetime as possible (which is very little these days) to sit down with a good book and read! Gone are the days of her teens when she would read about 10 books a week!! Now she is very fortunate to manage two!!Ollie has just found a new job. He now works as an editor for a christian magazine. He loves his work. Not many people get to do bible study as part of their work!! He is also deeply in love with his children. He is not the type of father who spends most of his time at work and the rest sleeping!! He often brings his work home with him and works in the study, this means that he is able to spend his breaks with his children- and sometimes even take them for private lessons. He is better at some subjects than Saranne! He is also very active in their local assembly (church) and its a joy to see him growing more spiritually as the years pass. Its amazing how much more we learn of the Lord as the years pass by!Both Saranne and Ollie have felt the presence of the Lord over the last few years. His grace truely has been sufficient in all the trails and tribulation that they have experienced! The blessings that the Lord has given them have been wonderful! And yet, despite all that he has given them now we know that is cannot compare with that which they have ahead in eternity!! "Eye hath not seen nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him"
