[Surname] Re: Beliso
in reply to a message by Paula DeAngelis
Hello Paula,
I lived in Sicily for many years and later moved to Rome. I studied History at the University in Milan just to give you a little background. I did see the link Marc had posted up and he is correct that the Beliso family shows relatives in the Philippines and Spain. However, the name BELISO and it's origin is from Italy. My guess is the family may have originated from Italy and later moved to Spain. This is common being they are not that far from one another. Also, a good thing to remember is that the Philippines was once ruled by Spaniards. So you can begin to see a pattern here. Many of the names are similar, but I can tell you the spelling and origin of this one particular name, Beliso, is from Italy.

If Beliso is Italian in origin, how do you account for the fact that the name doesn't show up on any of following websites which list the surnames of Italy:
http://gens.labo.net/
http://www.infobel.com/en/italy
http://www.cognomiitaliani.org/cognomi/cognomi0002e.htm
Nor does it appear in Francipane's Dizionario ragionato dei cognomi italiani (2005) which is the most complete and up-to-date Italian surname dictionary.

Our name originated in Brittany, France when 2 families united, Val and LIson became Valison. When they branched out into the Philippines, because of the pronunciation and that the alphabet there does not contain "V" it was changed to Beliso.
