[Opinions] Elaine
This name seems to have been popular during the 1950s and 1960s. Has it fallen off too much to be considered for a new baby, or is it classsic since its one of the Arthurian names?
Does anybody know how it should really be pronounced - the more authentic pronunciation (long first E or not?). It's not my favourite but I'm considering it as an E name and it could grow on me (but only as a compromise choice).
There's apparently a Welsh name, Elain ("fawn) - it's beeen suggested that this might be the true source of Elaine (rather than Helen). Hmmm ... interesting ...

It feels sort of dated to me

I've never heard it pronounced as Ee-lain but Ell-aine or il-aine if someone's speaking quickly.
I know someone in her 20s called Elaine, but generally I associate it with people in their late 30s, 40s, 50s. I don't think it's quite ready for a comback yet but it is quite pretty.

I associate Elaine with Arthurian legend. I pronounce it with a long e at the beginning, but I say it fast enough that it kind of sounds like a short e. With my limited knowledge of Welsh (and double checking), I think that the e of a non-stressed syllable is short. I think it's a pretty name. I have a particular fondness for all Arthurian names, whether I really like the sound of them or not. :) Ygraine is similar enough to Elaine. I really like that one too.
Its my middle name
And I say it Ell-aine. I like it, but not as a first name. I don't think its too dated though.
