It has been another five years for the Bartletts.
Jack, 50, is planning to work another three years, then retire. He has had a long, successful medical practice and is glad to see his eldest son take over the practice. Jack is anxious to be able to devote all of his time to his grandchildren.
Mary, 47, is a very loving and doting grandmother. She is very busy in town and helps out a great many people through the church.
Jonny, 25, has had a busy five years. He finished medical school two years ago, but took a year after that to travel around Europe and observe doctors and surgeons from other countries. While in Europe, he met a young woman named Florence Marcella Dubois. Florence was seeing one of the doctors that Jonny was studying under. Florence was suffering from tuberculosis and seemed to be recovering. Jonny started falling for her and her baby son, Théodore Marcel. Théodore's father (Florence's husband) had passed away of tuberculosis a few weeks before his birth, and Florence had no one else to turn to. Jonny began helping her care for Théodore while she was in treatment. Jonny was in France (where Florence lived) for five weeks before she contracted pneumonia. Florence passed away three days later. Jonny was with Florence when she died, and promised to take care of Théodore. Jonny left the infant in care of the hospital nurses until he could return four months later. Jonny brought Théodore back to the US and is raising him as his own. Jonny hasn't said too much about Florence, but Mary believes that he would have married her eventually.
Matt, 24, has been doing well with his carpentry business. He's recently begun to specialize in crafting fine furniture and has clients from as far away as Chicago and Charleston. Marie, his wife, is a wonderful mother to their three children. Their oldest, Michael Henry, has just turned five. He is very adventurous and enjoys all the little animals his daddy makes for him. Thomas Edmund is their second son. He is a three year old. Tommy is also pretty outgoing and is always on the move. Matt and Marie's youngest is also a boy--Zachary Mitchell. Zach just turned one and is crawling all over. He hasn't yet figured out how to walk. Matt and Marie have a handful with their three boys, but they are very happy to have them.
Lily and her husband Joseph are very busy running the mercantile. Joseph recently got in a new shipment of sewing machines and they are selling very quickly. Lily helps mind the store, but she is also busy with her three (soon to be four) children. Ashton, 10, is a sweet girl who does very well in school. She is always very helpful and looks on Lily as her mother (though she was adopted). Sylvia, 9, is very shy. She likes working in the store restocking the shelves. June, 5, is an easy-going little girl with a good sense of humor. She likes to tell jokes and is very good at understanding them.
Rube, 21, is busy building a shipping empire for himself. He worked for his uncle until last year, when he decided to move out west and set up a shipping business in San Diego, California. He settled in San Diego and now sends and recieves shipments from his uncle's business in New Orleans. Rube also ships to Kansas, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Kentucky. He is also looking into opening up a line to Tennessee.
Lizzy, 20, was invited to New York at the age of 18 to play some piano pieces on Broadway. She succeeded there and has been travelling the country performing in nearly all the major cities. Lizzy loves to travel and has no plans of stopping anytime soon. Her beau, Willis Maynard, is 22. He still wishes to marry Lizzy, but she no longer wants to marry him. Of course, she hasn't told Willis this, but she has also been seeing one of her travelling companions, Clayton William Neal. Clayton is three years older than Lizzy and is an actor and singer.
Rita, 18, has found a veterinarian to apprentice her. She has a single-minded focus on becoming a qualified veterinarian and she has no interest in marriage, even though she has had offers from two young men.
Lijah, 17, moved out West with his older brother Rube last year. He has always wanted to see the world and is now beginning to do so. Lijah thinks that he may decide to join Rube and his uncle in the shipping business, but is also curious about a career in law enforcement.
Zeke, 15, has become a quite adept outdoorsman. He enjoys hunting and being outside. He was very disappointed that Lijah got to go across the country without him, but is getting used to being the oldest son at home. He kind of likes it. Zeke has decided that maybe he'd like to work as a train conductor. Once Rube gets his shipping business set up, Zeke wants to go out and follow the conductors around.
Paul, 13, is the youngest Batlett child. He feels that the house is much too quiet with just him, Zeke, Rita, and his parents. Paul thinks that he might want to try farming for a living. He also hopes to get good enough at drawing that he can sell some of his pictures to earn some extra money.
