Some of these are just hilarious!
GIRLS
Butterfly - I acutally knew a Butterfly, back in pre school. I'm pretty sure her parents were hippies.
Cricket - Um, I'm not sure if I like this or not. I don't *want* to, though.
Hen - I like this a nn for something more...y'know, non-chickeny.
Koi - I do like this one.
Lark - Again, maybe as a nn. But it would have to be for a really cool first name.
Manatee - Possibly worst animal to be named after, EVER. This one had me laughing for a good long time.
Sow - Wait, no, Manatee's been beat!
Sparrow - Hmm, on the fence here.
Viper - I'd like this on a certain kind of person, I think. Non-hookerish, of course. But a really strong type.
Wren - Like.
BOYS
Newt - I'd probably pee my pants if I met someone really named Newt. And then I'd befriend them.
All the rest for the boys I don't care for.

Butterfly: Miz Scarlett, I dunno nuthin bout birthin no babies!
Cat: Cute nn for Catherine, but no good as a full name.
Cricket: Annoying, childish name.
Hen: Even Henrietta is better than this.
Manatee: They are the ugliest damn animals!
Mink: Good drag queen name. Also a mink is really just a dressed-up weasel.
Panther: Stripper name.
Peacock: And don't tell me this name will not invite awful jokes.
Rook: Verb: to cheat or swindle.
Sow: There is no excuse for this one. none.
Viper: WWF girl? Stripper? Hired assassin?
Badger: Smelly fierce animal: Verb: to pester.
Cobra: Viper's sidekick.
Coyote: He takes all those poor Mexican people's money and runs them across the desert till they get to the border.
Finche: Remember "American Pie?"
Kiwi: I suppose they could have picked an uglier bird, say a turkey buzzard. But for sheer feathered goofiness?
Lamb: Yes, I know about the twin white supremacist "musicians" named Lamb and Lynx. I can only think of Lamb as either something to eat, or what Mammy called Scarlett: What's mah lamb gwine wear?"
Mandrill: *sniggers* Isn't that the monkey with the bright colored butt? Or alternatively: He's drillin' with his Man drill.
Newt: Slimy, cold-blooded, ugly. Gingrich.
Pike, Ram: more oh so very manly porno names.
Stallion: Nothing beats this though for sheer pretentiousness.
Tiger: Babyish nn.
Wolf: Only if your last name is Blitzer.
Cat: Cute nn for Catherine, but no good as a full name.

Of this list, I really only like Lark for a girl. Wren is all right. I like other animal names, but not the ones here...
Butterfly is so strange to me because I've just read M. Butterfly. The association to that, and of course to the opera Mme. Butterfly, is a strange one. I'm not sure I'd want to call a kid Butterfly for that reason, personally. But it's also the reason that I can see Butterfly as a name, and it's not as odd as it might be. Hmm.
