If you but an umlat over the U the sound would almost be like a y-sound. I'm not sure though if the English really has the y-sound that an umlat creates. It's close to the y in story but it's more dragged out and the sound is further back in the mouth.
I don't really know how else to explain it. I hope it gives you some help.
