Help[Opinions] Mirella and Thomas
I was in a meeting today when a sibling set came up - Thomas, Linnea and April. I love the names, but I'm especially enamored with Thomas. I like the vibe of it. It's sensible but I haven't heard it too often. I'm also thinking of Mirella/Mirela again. It's been a favorite but I'm hesitant to use it. It has the very popular "ella" sound and I'm also afraid it's too close to my niece's name, Mira (meer-a). Opinions?
Siblings, as always, would be along the lines of Liora Helen/Leah Helen, Judith Cecilia, Joseph Allan, Raphael Christian/Julian Raphael

I love Thomas. It is handsome and strong and I love the history of the name. It is a name I would consider for a son of mine one day. I think it fits in really well with your other names.
I have never really warmed to Mirella. I think it may be the -ella ending as I tend to steer away from frilly names. But for someone else's kid its fine. In your case, I think it is a little close to Mira, especially seeing as you seem to be especially close to Mira. I am just imagining the "Mirella, where did you get that top?" at a family function and both Mira and Mirella answering.

Thomas is so, so, so, so boring. There are SO many here. No idea how it is in the US, though. I'd probably like it if it weren't for the popularity- I find the sound of it quite attractive.

No one would know how to pronounce it. LOL - In DC no one can pronounce a Germanic/Swedish name, here no one can pronounce something that's French.

Well, look at it this way... each new person would have to be corrected once--maybe twice. If they need to be corrected a third time, they're probably not worth getting to know. Plus, it would make an interesting conversation piece (the pronunciation).

And a fairly unusual first name. Some people got it after the first correction. Most didn't. I was in a meeting yesterday and I was called Raven over and over again - no matter how often I corrected the woman. :-/ (I'm Haven)

I got Serena all the time from an English teacher no less [after I kept correcting her everyday and she had papers with my name on it]. It's people like that being ignorant [well in my case it was].
I mean we correct them [many times] and it seems they refuse to correct themselves they just don't care, your name isn't hard to remember [IMO] I just think she didn't bother to correct it. I don't think it's cause your name is unusual [could partly be it] it's just cause it sounds similar to Raven, just like Sabrina sounds similar to Serena type thing.
ETA: I could see if a name was extremely hard to pronounce/remember but if you are repeating it over and over many times they should get it by then.

I wish I had such a narrow view of the world.
I tend to view it as people unfamiliar with a name and who have a memory issue before I decide they're ignorant.

Although I know that was a dig, I kind of agree with Sabrina here. Siri, I know you have seen my surname before and to me it seems easy- it is pronounced exactly as it is spelt. My first name is Elise. Easy IMO. No one ever pronounces it correctly. Ever. And even when I correct them it is like the majority of people like their pronunciation better or something so they just keep saying it that way, even minutes after I correct them.
And people call me Elsie, Elly, Louise, Eloise, Ellen, even Elinor so often I cannot count. I work in a call centre and answer the phone "Welcome to *company* this is Elise how can I help you today?" and they usually say "Oh Louise is it (or whatever name they think it is)?" I'll correct them and say it's Elise and straight away they go "Okay my problem is Louise....etc etc"
I really think most people just don't care that much. Meanwhile, my brother's friend Caoimhe never has a mispronunciation after she corrects them the first one or two times...but I think that is because the alternative is calling her COW-M-HE and Keeva seems much easier!

Really Elise [is gorgeous by the way] isn't really hard to say? My mother's name is Marilia [Mah-rill-ee-uh] and almost everyone says it wrong, IMO it's not hard. She always get's Marie, Maria, etc. If anything I could see mar-uh-lee-uh but how do you get Marie? LOL.

My last name is Homayouni. The only people who get it right are the robots on the phone because it's pronounced exactly phoenetically. Only twice I think did a [non-Persian] person pronounce it correctly.

Thomas is so handsome and fits in beautifully with your other names. I can easily picture you having a Thomas. Sadly, I get the same "pwetty pwincess" vibe from Mirella/Mirela as Tippins, especially compared to the no-frills earthiness of Judith, Leah, and (to a lesser extent) Liora. I don't care for it. I also think it's too close to Mira. Perhaps if you didn't have much contact with her, it would be okay, but I know you're a big presence in your nieces' lives.

I love Thomas , it was my grandfathers name. He was Thomas Bray (his middle name was his mothers maiden name)
I think Mirella is fine. It could be a tad close to Mira, but if it doesnt bother anyone who cares? I find it can be difficult to find names totally unlike others. I have a niece called Aryellah, so everytime I like a name that ends with ella or starts with Ara/Ari I think 'its to close' and it really narrows my choices!

I feel that way about Thomas as well. It's one of those names that was so common for so long that I completely overlook it, but now, when I think on it objectively, I find it very appealing. I have an Uncle Tommy, and a close friend of the family is a Tom, though, so I don't know.
Though Tippins' description of Mirella was delightful, I don't think it has that feeling (though I am in total agreement about Gianna, Liliana and Caramia haha). That being said, I don't really like it. I don't think it's too close to Mira; I just don't find the sounds appealing together. I do like Mir- names, and I do like -ella names, but somehow, it just isn't working for me. Have you considered Marcella?

I loooove Thomas. It is soft and stable. I also love Tom.
I haaaate Mirella. That super sweet Mir- needs something more stable than -ella or -elle to back it up. I like Miranda but Mirella is just like drinking molasses. Ugggh. I also hate Caramia, Gianna pronounced gee-AH-nah, and Liliana for the same reasons (though I do not have any problem with Lillian). It is VERY pwetty pwetty pwincess to me

Thomasina is actually the third name in my second girls combo, Cordelia Tippins Thomasina. I never liked it before this year, I though it was kind of "Ummm okay," like Jamesina or Norbertina or something, but I read Arcadia this year and liked the character, and Arcadia was VERY significan... http://www.behindthename.com/bb/arcview.php?id=3172231&board=baby

Anyway I like it but I resent Tom as a nickname for it because Tom is not only masculine, it is drop-dead gorgeous. The reason I like Tom is because I... have a character named Thomas Regulus Aquinas Voltaire (mns are cultural) nn Tom, and um I also have a big crush on him. And that is the only real association I have with Tom, and I think it is a great set of three letters and a nice noise and I like the T and the M and the fact that there is an H in the original but not anymore. But I can understand how an association would ruin it.
Incidentally I spoke again with the young Joshua today, and we all asked him which name he preferred, Joshua, Josh, JP, or Pax (mn Paxton). "Joshua," he said. And everyone calls him Joshua. *shrug* just saying.

I love Thomas. I do hear it a lot, but it doesn't bother me. It fits well with your favorites. Linnea... I'm not crazy about. I never liked that Lynn sound. I detest April though, very... cheap and tacky to me.
Mirella is beautiful, I knew a girl named Mirella, she was adopted from Romania. It also reminds me of Murilla from Anne of Green Gables and that's a great association for me.
