[Opinions] Joseph or Joshua?
I've always loved Joshua but lately I've been moving away from it. It seems like a name for a little boy, while Joseph is a man's name. Joseph has always been popular whereas Joshua was almost obsolete before the 1970s. However Joshua does have some advantages over Joseph. My parents love the name and wanted to use it for my brother in 1972 but were talked out of it - people said it was far too old-fashioned to be used. It would be a neat way of honoring them. Joseph is also the middle name of my boyfriend's brother, which makes it slightly unusable. However I've decided to ignore family connections unless it's a first name, otherwise there would be no names left to use (he has 6 siblings, I've got 4 and we both have numerous cousins and second-cousins).Opinions? In both causes the child would mostly be called by the first name with Joss as an occasional nn (in other words my family would call him Joss but everyone else would call him Joseph or Joshua).

Joshua nn Joss;)Joseph and Joshua are both way too overused, imo, but Joshua has a bit more flavor to me for some reason. And I abhor the possible nn Joey, so that may have something to do with it as well.

I love both names, as they are both very masculine to me. I would go with Joshua though. I just love the name, the meaning and the Biblical connection. I think Joshua is perfectly fine for a man, no worries.

I am sick to death of Joshua. Joshua is the male Sarah. I've just known way too many of them. Forty or fifty years ago I would have picked Joshua over Joseph, because I actually like it better, but now I feel that it's become too much of a cliche. I think Joseph, on the other hand, is underused these days.

Joseph, definitelyI can't stand the name Joshua. It think it has an annoying and unattractive sound.I love Joseph. It's my brother's name so I will most likely use it as a mn.

JosephI agree that Joshua sounds somewhat little kiddish (even though I know grown Joshuas). Joseph is not quite as popular as Joseph, and I think it's a very strong, handsome name, particular when it is used in full (although I don't mind Joe and Joey). I wouldn't worry about it being X's brother's MN. Some names are bound to show up twice in a large family, and it's just his MN, so it wouldn't be so obvious.

Both are good. Our older son is called Joseph. so I tend to favour that name. It also goes well with our 4-syllable last name, and works in English, French and even Arabic, which was a consideration.
He's actually named for Saint Joseph!

I prefer Joseph. Joseph feels more timeless than Joshua. Both are classics that will stand the test of time well. It's just that Joshua had an explosion of popularity in the 80's and that's how I usually think of it. Happily, you can't go wrong with either name. I love the nn Joss, by the way, for either name.

Joseph, and I'm sooo glad you're not going to use a nickname day-to-day. It's such a dignified name in full. I feel like Joe cheapens it.

Joseph! No doubt about it. I think Joseph is a lovely, masculine name and timeless as well. I don't like any nn for Joseph and I'm glad to see that you are not planning on using any for the most part.
Joshua on the other hand is a name I've never liked the sound of. Just as you described it Joshua seems like a name for a little boy. I also have a terrible name memory from when I was young. My family and I were at a fair and there was this boy who yelled at his brother all the time. "Josh. Josh. Joshie, Joshie." Gah! Joshie! It was horrible.
