[Opinions] Re: Nicknames for Octavia? (and a few others?)
in reply to a message by Tippins
I'm not at all a fan of nicknames.
Sorry if you already said this, but I quite like Tavia (or, as you said, Tavie). Still three syllables, but an easy progression to make, and it sounds so much less contrived than any of the others. It also fits in with other well used names, e.g. Olivia. (That way your children won't be so embarrassed by their mothers name-nerdiness, which is what I assume you are trying to achieve by having nicknames) Also, Tavie seems to have some about in a similar fashion to Victoria nn Tori.
I prefer Bobby to Rudy, simply because my mother used to call my sister and I nudy rudy's when we ran around naked after a bath when we were younger (sorry for that, but every time you post it I think that). Buuuut Bobby is quite contrived (for Rudolph)and I prefer Robbie as a nn for Robert.
I also hope Cordelia would be just that most of the time too. The reason Cordelia never earned a permanent spot on my PNL was because I hate all of the nns for it. (well, as stated before, I hate the concept of nns altogether, but that is irrelevant)
Mimi sounds ridiculous and sort of...tacky. I prefer Minnie by far.
To be perfectly honest, I think there is nothing wrong with Adelaide. I think she could go by just Adelaide quite easily.

Tavia feels like two syllables to me, TAYV-ya. It fits in really well, I agree, but that's part of why I dislike it.
My namenerdiess is part of my nicknaming policy, and it's really most of it when it comes to Minne and Rudy for Minerva and Rudolf. I really do think that Minerva and Rudolf would get teased almost incessantly if they didn't have nice comfortable nicknames to sit back on. My desire for nicknames for Octavia is simply because I like Octavia written and said about five or six times - heck, I love it - but before too long I start to feel a bit silly. The same thing happens with Cordelia, but Cordelia can easily become Corrie, Delia, or Della for a few minutes. Octavia would become Octy, Tave, or Tavia. Octy is ridiculous and Tavia is so damn SWEET! Tave and Tavy are both really cool sounding, you know? like Jade and Maeve and Tay and all of these self-important, long-A heavy trendy floppy pseudo-names that infuriate me so much. (Occy wouldn't be that bad actually.)
Hee hee nudy rudy! Maybe that is what his wife will call him.
I like a lot of Cordelia's nn's. I am curious about what you mean when you say you dislike them. Do you dislike ALL of them or just permanent ones, or the concept of planned ones? I can definitely understand hating planned ones. Someone used to post about Ceridwen "Poet" and that made me want to punch everyone. Zelda Lenore "Poe," as much as I love Clippy's combos, also makes me a bit sad. I think they should come naturally. When I browse nickname ideas I try to think of what would come naturally if I were addressing an Octavia. I am trying to figure out whether there are enough of these names that I like that I wouldn't mind having an Octavia. KWIM?

Ah. yes. I think we discussed our slight differences in pronounciation of ~ia endings when it came to Cecilia. But anyway.
hmmm. The concept of nicknames irks me mainly because of the planned ones on here. e.g.Ceridwen nn Poet. That is awful. But, I think my dislike of nicknames has been pressed on me by my mother, whose name is Elizabeth. I think that she simply gets very tired of all of the different things people call her, so gave my sister and I nicknameless names. Also, my father's name is Joseph nn Joe, and he had similar problems with nicknames as a child (My grandmother, bless her, thought it would be cute to call him Jody).
Cordelia. I love saying it, I think it is beautiful and melodic and really just good fun to say. However Corrie is just...kind of...well I can't quite pinpoint it but I just don't like it. I seems too close to Cory, which I don't like. I hate the cord in Cordy, and Delia is plain not my style. Lia could grow on me, but I have bad associations with Leah, so it isn't really usable.
I love Minnie to bits. I have a great-great-aunt with the name, and she is just the spunkiest 93-year-old you ever met. (Plus she often sends 20 pounds to "buy an icecream" :P) I can sort of see the appeal of Mimi, and I think it is quite cute on a little kid, but over the age of three stops being cute.
A little Adelaide nn Addy might get lost among the Addisons. Hmm but I do quite like it...I'll have to think about that.
Lucretia is alright. I can sort of see you getting hassled because of it's myth, but how many people in the general popluation are going to know that she was raped? I don't particularly like the -cre- sound in the middle, I think it sounds sort of rude. But hey.
