I love Finn for a boy. It's fun, without being cutesy or "out there."
And I think it can stand on its own. Irish folk legend Finn McCool makes this do-able. Finn makes a nice nn for names like Finbarr, Fintan, Fingal etc. But it doesn't have to have one.
