I'll add just my personal observations since everyone else has addressed the question itself. When my dd Katherine (nn Katie at the time) was a baby/toddler, there were several times that Kassie came out of my mouth so I can vouch that the transition felt natural. And when one considers how Kasia evolved as a pet form of the Polish version of Katherine (Katarzyna), I can fully understand how the nn transferred to other forms as well (sort of like Marguerite being the French word for 'daisy' and then Daisy becoming a nn for Margaret years later).

Indeed. I know a Katherine that goes by Kassie. Also, if you look at the Polish form of Katherine (Katarzyna) a pet form is Kasia.

My grandmother, Catherine, went by Cassie.

I think that is true, but it was not a very popular nickname.
