Derek opened the door on his way to work when he nearly stumbled over a basket with a newborn boy left on his doorstep. Derek and Leah immediately called the police and turned the child over to Social Services. At the time the couple had not seriously dicussed having children together. It was always one of those, "We'll get around to it someday" matters, but this experience brought the matter to the forefront of their minds. Both agreed they wanted to start a family, but they would never forget the little baby they found on their doorstep that fateful day. The baby's mother had suffered from drug addiction, but was able to get the help she needed to recover and was eventually able to take custody of her son again.
