[Opinions] Utopia
No, I'm not asking about the name Utopia, you can relax. ;)With the recent release of the SSA 2007 most popular names, I've been wondering something: In your perfect world, what would the top 10 or 50 or whatever names have been?ETA: http://ssa.gov/cgi-bin/popularnames.cgi

Well, that's a tricky question. I wouldn't like any of my favourites to become popular, but I would also like classy names to become popular. With that in mind, I'd say something like:1. Anna
2. Julia
3. Mary
4. Eliza
5. Victoria
6. Rose
7. Jane
8. Jemima (I wish this wasn't associated with syrup)
9. Johanna
10. AdelaideThe boys' names list is actually pretty close to my ideal: Classic names that I wouldn't personally use, since I like mine uncommon. So, I don't think I'd really change much there, honestly.

I actually wish that none of my faves were ever popularI'm hoping that Constantine never makes it into the top 1000. It's been my favorite boys' name since around 1st grade and really hope that my future husband likes it as much as I do. If I couldn't use Constantine I think I'd seriously be heartbroken. But I don't want my childrens' names to be common at all. I've enjoyed an uncommon name too much.

Same here. If Isla were number 1, I probably wouldn't like it much at all. Or at least would feel I couldn't use it, because she'd be one of many Islas in her class. :b But I'd still be proud the #1 name was a gorgeous one, and maybe names like Madison & Destinee wouldn't be so abundant. ;)

You should check the number of births on the list thoughNames at the bottom have just over 200... Even if Constantine or something else made the bottom of the list, odds are your Constantine would never meet any of the others.

LOL really? The top 1000? That is pretty extreme. Aileen's never even dropped out of the top 1000, and it's (usually) a spelling variation of a more common name.Anything below ~250-300 I consider "uncommon." I think that is a good range, actually, because they are all ordinary enough to be recognizable but distinct enough to be memorable. I'm so glad Simon is continuing to hover there this year!Constantine is a great name, the more I think about it. I know a kid whose FN/MN is John Constantine, I think that's amazing.

I would knock all my favorites out of the Top 20, and replace them with similar names that are nice to hear, but won't overlap with my favorites - that way they'll still be special! ;) Plus, I'll replace all the really terrible names with suitable alternatives. 1. Emily
2. Isabel (changed from Isabella)
3. Emma
4. Ava
5. Madeleine (changed from Madison)
6. Sophia
7. Lydia (changed from Olivia)
8. Hannah (changed from Abigail)
9. Annabel (changed from Hannah)
10. Elisabeth (changed from Elizabeth - I love it, but wouldn't use it, so it's staying)
11. Addison (again - I like it, but wouldn't use it)
12. Samantha
13. Ashley (see Addison)
14. Alyssa
15. Amelia (changed from Mia)
16. Carmen (changed from Chloe)
17. Nanette (changed from Natalie)
18. Sarai (changed from Sarah)
19. Alexandrine (changed from Alexis)
20. Gracia (changed from Grace) 1. Jonas (changed from Jacob)
2. Michael

They would have to be names that I wouldn't want to use myself, but wouldn't mind seeing or hearing all the time. They'd probably be names with lots of nn potential, so they wouldn't all be the same.1. Katherine / Catherine
2. Mary
3. Margaret
4. Elizabeth
5. Alexandra
6. Julia
7. Alice
9. Frances
10. Ellen (or maybe Helen)Boys

Okay, this is what I'd like to be the top 10. It's made up of names I really like, but not my absolute favs, because I don't want them to be too popular:Girls:
1 Serafina
2 Kerensa
3 Lovisa
4 Vianne
5 Leocadia
6 Iris
7 Nimue
8 Ceres
9 Lilias
10 ArtemisBoys:
1 Laszlo
2 Ariston
3 Romeo
4 Solomon
5 Rodion
6 Ramses
7 Conway
8 Porfirio
9 Mordecai
10 AramisSo quite different from what's actually happening, I think only Iris is pretty common out of those.
vote up1
LOL. I like a lot of these names but I think I would get a bit overwhelmed to meet more than one Porfirio or Aramis in my life. Or Leocadia or Serafina. I think most of these would probably start to annoy me if I heard them too much. Not Iris, Conway, Laszlo or Solomon though.
vote up1
I wish those names would be considered more 'normal', now I'd be shocked as well if I met more than one Leocadia or Porfirio. And I secretly hope that the names I like would be more usable as well, because now people tend to think of them as a bit over the top I think. I'd lvoe to use Mordecai for example, but I don't think i can really do that to my child :(

Hmmm. That's really hard... I'm torn between wanting my kids to stand out (not have 5 kids in their class with their names), and wanting the names in this country to just be better. :P Let's see... my top twenties would contain (perhaps not in this order, but something like this):Elizabeth (all the nicknames make this perfect)
Sophia, Olivia, Emily, and Sarah can stay
I'd love a bigger revival from the beginning of the century: Emma, Ella, Anna, Maude / Maud, Alice, Lillian, Rose, Grace, and Marie
Mary, Ruth, Margaret, Jane, Eva, and Janis (just because I love Janis, but probably wouldn't use it)William, Thomas, Nicholas, Anthony, Alexander,
Benjamin, Adam, John, James
An Ed- name, not necessarily Edward though (Edgar would be excellent)
George, Rupert, Julius, August, Lee, Peter,
Jacob can stay, but not as number 1
A name that's become more a girl's name (though perhaps not Ashley... Casey and Courtney, maybe?)
And Larry, to go with Janis (;])

Ooh yeah Abigail.
This is a good sensible list. I agree with
Emma, Isabella, Abigail, Sophia, Alyssa, Sarah, Anna, Julia, Elizabeth, Gabriella, Alexandra, Audrey, Rachel, Olivia, and Victoria. Not with any of the rest thoughAlso Ethan, Joshua, Jacob, William, Alexander, Noah, James, Nicholas, Joseph, John, Aidan, Gabriel, and Elijah, but the only one I actually think is abd is Tyler.

Tyler is GP for me.

All the ones I don't like so that my names aren't really popular. But then again, I don't want other people to give their kids really ugly names.
