I love Peregrine! I love Per! I love Danish names! I love The Lord of the Rings (Merry and Pippin the most)! I even somewhat like falcons..hehe. Oh, you could just call him Pip if Pippin is too over-the-top for you.
I think you get that I love it. As for working today, I think he could pull it off. It's not like he'd have the easiest name to learn to spell in kindergarten, but after all, you would nickname him Per for a reason. Per would go anytime. I love it!

Btw, I have a long time favourite character named Ryland Per and I never even noticed Per could be short for Peregrine.
