[Opinions] Re: Agnes

Agnes is one of my all-time favorite names, period. But I'm just the opposite of you: I love Agnes, but hate the NN Aggie... perhaps because I'm from Texas, and there are two types of Texans: University of Texas (UT) fans, and Agriculture & Mechanics (A&M) fans. A&M fans are called Aggies, and have loooong been the butt of bad jokes. So maybe that's why I don't like Aggie. Also it sounds sort of "gaggy" to me for some reason. I don't like the NN Ness, either, so I've written off Agnes.
But if you love Aggie, go for it! Agnes is a lovely name. I first loved it when I read it in 'The Thorn Birds' by Colleen McCullough. It was the name of the main character's favorite doll as a child, and she named it that because it was the only name she could think of lovely and elegant enough for her beautiful doll. :-)
Some MNs I like with Agnes (keeping in mind I adore pairing vowels with vowels):
Elena
Ophelia
Yvaine
Elaida (eh-LY-duh)
Odessa
Marina
Lucine
Joanna
Elisabeth
Eliana
Domenica
M.
