[Opinions] Danaë and Abaddon? (m)
Lately I've been really loving the name Danaë. I also really like the name Zoë, and I'm very insistent about the 'ë', which I think I have a bit of a love affair with. But anyway, Danaë - I like it as a potential middle name, especially to Lyra, and I like on its own as a first name, as well. Any mn suggestions? And WDYT?As for Abaddon, I don't think I'd want to actually use it on my kid, but if I for some reason did (I won't), it would definitely be relegated to the middle name spot. I really like the sound of the name, though, as well as the connotations...I think I'd love it on a character, one of those anti-hero types (maybe something along the lines of Crowley in Good Omens, if you've read that). To that end...WDYT?

I wouldn't use Danaé, but it's nice, esp. as a middle name. Abaddon is way too close to "abandon" (and hasn't got the nicest meaning either now that I've checked it).

I definitely like Danae a lot as a middle name, and in addition to liking the name itself, I really love the fact that though it's recognizable, it's not even ranked in the top 1000.I really only like Abaddon as a character name, anyway, particularly for an anti-hero, so in that sense the meaning definitely works, I think.

if it's for a character then it works fine

AbaddonThe problem with Abaddon as a villain or anti-hero name is that it's already been used repeatedly for just that in literature and cinema and video games. At this point it's a little trite.

Has it? Ah, I was afraid that it might have been, but the only place I've ever heard it was as a last name for one of the more minor characters on Lost. Oh well.

Unfortunately. :(I've been playing through a video game lately in which the main evil god is Abaddon and his followers chant the name in basically every cut scene, so I could be a little hypersensitive. Here's a list of some other recent appearances: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abaddon_%28disambiguation%29

It does seem that the majority of the time it appears as one-name-only, like "Cher" or "Madonna" (except not at all like either of them, because, well, obviously). It also seems to be more common on gods or demons or overlords than actual people...so perhaps that would give the name a bit of novelty? Or maybe I'm just being too optimistic.
