Help[Opinions] Bastian and Solveig.
Okay, I have two names for you guys.
1) WDYTO Bastian? Would you pronounce it BAS-chen or BAS-tee-an? Do you think it is good standing alone or should it be a nn for Sebastian?
2) How do YOU pronounce Solveig? I *love* the prn that is here on BtN (Sol-vay) but I heard someone pronounce it SOL-VIEG recently and was wondering if that's a legit way to pronounce it also. Because I'm not too thrilled with it then. WDYT?

For a moment there I though you where Danish given the fact that both those names are used in Denmark...
1) I like Bastian. I (unlike the others, who have replied) do in fact like Sebastian, so I think Bastian is decent. I like Sebastian more, though. I would pronounce it BAS-tee-an.
2) Solveig I would pronounce the only way I know; the Danish way: SOOL-vai.
The 'Sol' part is NOT like Sol, the nn for Solomon. In fact the 'L' is a bit "hushed"; the weight is on the 'SO' and the 'O' is a bit drawned out.
'vai' is like Kai only with a v instead of a k.
I like Solveigs modern meaning as well - it means Sun road in modern Danish.

I like Bastian by itself. I think it is great. I pronounce it Bass-tchen, so very close to Bas-chen.
I have known to people named Solveig and they pronounced it Soul-vague. However, both of those people were born in America to parents of Norwegian/Swedish birth, so it may be their pronunciation and not the legit pronunciation.

Bastian - I would prn it BAS-chen. As for your second question...that's a tough one. I don't like Sebastian very much (makes me think of the crab), but I tend to favor using full names as opposed to nns as fns. Hmm, I suppose I'd just name him Bastian. I think it's one of those nns that works well as a full name. A quick google search for Bastian reveals that it's a surname that has been used as a fn in the past.
Solveig - I know that the correct prn is SOL-vay (which is lovely, by the way), but if I didn't know better I'd be tempted to prn it SOL-vayg. SOL-vieg is hideous, BTW. I think if I were you, I'd avoid prn issues by spelling the name Solvay. It would be so much easier for English speakers that way.

1. I would say it Bas-tee-an. It could quite easily stand alone I think. I hate Sebastian with a passion- it is such a little prissy mummy's boy name. Bastian is marginally better, but it still gives that vibe off for me.
2. I say Solvieg Sol-vay. I used to know a girl with this name and I am 99% sure that this is the only legitimate Norweigan pronounciation. I think if someone were pronouncing it Sol-veig then they just aren't familiar with the correct way. It is a very nice name!

1) Eh, I don't really care for it, but like it better than Sebastian. I've always disliked Sebastian. BAS-chen, but not a super hard CH sound, it's more of a ch/sh blend.
2) SOL-vay, but I would guess that many people would pronounce with a G sound. I like the sound of SOL-vay, but I don't like the way it looks.

1. I think bastard first off. I dislike Sebastian a great deal (it's one of those JESUS CHRIST IT'S A SEBASTIAN GET IN THE CAR names for me), and cutting off the only element I like in it (Seb!) makes me all the crankier about it.
2. The only Solveig I've met pronounced it SOL-veg (like vegetable, but with a hard G). That's how I would say it if I used it, I think. I love the name, in any case; it sounds just like what a solje broach looks like, IMO.
