Help[Opinions] Ausra or Niamh?(m)
For a story... I am probably going to replace Ausra for a female black lab because right now Niamh is my favorite name even though the spelling is a nightmare. For those of you who don't know how to pronounce it yet, it is said like NEEV. It means bright. Probably will either do Ausra Niamh or Niamh Ausra as a combo.

Niamh is my favorite name for a girl too. If I magically had a dd tomorrow, she would be Niamh.
But I don't like seeing the name used on animals, even in a story. I hate it when I suggest names like Rex and I get responses like, "That's a dog's name." Grrrrrrr.
Are you sure you want to use your favorite name this way? A friend's sister named her dog Zoe and then realized too late that she couldn't name a dd that. (Lame, huh?) I know your dog is fictional, but still. I don't want to see anything get in the way of a real live little Niamh one day. :-)
Mor means "great / grand / big" in Irish. It's listed as a girl's name in "Irish Names for Children," by Peg Coghlan. Ausra Brid ("breed") or Ausra Liadan would be nice as well.

I agree with you that the spelling Niamh is a nightmare. It may be the traditional spelling, but I would never know that was pronounced as "Neev" unless someone told me. That might be different outside of the U.S., though.
