Cecilia and Mathias had just ended their relationship when Cecilia discovered she was pregnant. Once he came to terms with Cecilia's pregnancy, he decided that they should make one last go of the relationship for the sake of the baby. Cecilia was convinced that the child was Mathias', but knew there was a possibililty it could be the child of her old boyfriend, Nikolas Pedersen, who had leant her a shoulder to cry on following Cecilia and Mathias' break-up.
Once the babies were 3 months old, Mathias' insisted upon a paternity test to reassure himself the children were his. He was devestated to find they weren't his but realised he had become so attached to the babies that he still wanted to be part of their life. Also, despite Katja not being his biological daughter, he still felt and unconditional love for her, which he knew he would also bear for the twins.
